2015 Co-op Student of the Year

Karley Skaret

Congratulations to Karley Skaret, fourth year Bachelor of Commerce student, on being selected as this year’s Gustavson School of Business Co-op Student of the Year!  Three outstanding students were nominated based on high academic achievement and excellent performance on a work term in 2015.

Karley worked at RGO Office Products, for her summer 2015 Co-op work term. As a result of her strong performance in the first month, her employer promoted her from an Office Clerk to a Finance and Operations role.  She worked on a number of projects including a process mapping and process improvements project, and an internal communications project.  Her responsibilities included aspects of managing financial information and developing financial tools for management decisions.  In this position, Karley exceeded her employer’s expectations with her problem-solving ability, and high-level skills.  Company CFO, Jonathan Gebert, was particularly impressed with her ability to work unsupervised with minimal direction, and with her ability to process, document and simplify complex processes.

In addition to her contribution to RGO Office Products, Karley has been an active volunteer in her local community with a number of non-profit societies including Soup Sisters, Canadian Diabetes Association, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  Karley also served as Vice President for the Young Women in Business UVic Chapter, and was a Cohort Representative for the Commerce Student Society.

Karley’s Co-op Coordinator, Sarah McQuillan, describes Karley as, “professional and positive,” and “an excellent role model for her peers.”  She also indicated that Karley demonstrated her strong support of Co-operative Education when she spoke to a senior company member about Co-op and forwarded her Coordinator’s contact information resulting in a subsequent Co-op employment opportunity for another UVic student.

We congratulate Karley on her outstanding representation of the Gustavson School of Business Cooperative Education Program!
