New Fellowship for PhD Students and Post-Doctoral Fellows

We are pleased to announce the President's Fellowship in Research-Enriched Teaching.  This fellowship will give PhD students and Post-Doctoral Fellows at the University of Victoria opportunities to integrate research and teaching.

The President's Fellowship in Research-Enriched Teaching supports the following priorities found in the University of Victoria Strategic Framework: cultivating an extraordinary academic environment, advancing research excellence and impact, and intensifying dynamic learning.  These fellowships will:

  • Better prepare UVic's PhD Students and Post-Doctoral Fellows who seek careers that involve teaching,
  • Encourage faculty mentors to embrace new opportunities in teaching and mentoring, and
  • Provide an enriched research-focused learning experience for our undergraduate students.

Andy Farquharson Teaching Excellence Award for Graduate Students

Thesis Boot Camp

UVic's 1st Thesis Boot Camp is taking place December 8-10, 2014. The Thesis Boot Camp is an opportunity for graduate students to write and to make substantial headway on their thesis or dissertation in an environment free of distractions. Participants will also have the opportunity to sign up for one on one consultations with the expert staff of the Centre for Academic Communication (formerly The Writing Centre). Dementia Friendliness

September is World Alzheimer's Month. UVic graduate Maria Przydatek (MA, 2014) studied how to make our urban spaces more accessible and conveneient for people with dementia. Her master's thesis explored the current understandings of dementia-friendly urban design in the province and identified key recommendations for cities to improve the living conditions of those with dementia. Teaching Assistant Conference

The Fall Teaching Assistant (TA) conference takes place Tuesday, September 2 to Friday, September 5, 2014 and offers four days of valuable workshops for graduate students. The workshops are organized to take you through the most essential steps necessary to fulfill your role as a new TA. Pre-registration is required. Vanier Scholar

Christine Fontaine, PhD graduate student in the Neuroscience graduate program, has been awarded the NSERC Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship for 2013-14 for her research in behavioural neuroscience. The prestigious awards provide $50,000 annually for up to three years to world-class doctoral students conducting leading-edge research. Vanier scholars balance outstanding academic and research achievements with genuine commitment to leadership and community engagement. The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships program is administered jointly by Canada's three research granting agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

We are pleased to announce that Confirmation of Registration letters have been revised to better meet student needs. They are now called Verification of Enrolments letters and are available self-serve in MyPage! A PDF version is now available on-demand and is free of charge!
