Leiden University rankings

UVic is a major hub for global research—and the data proves it.

The 2019 Leiden Rankings show that UVic-based researchers wrote a higher proportion of top-performing papers based on international collaborations than any other university in North America. In the nine years the Leiden Rankings have been released, UVic has claimed this spot eight times.

Leiden’s 2019 rankings place UVic fourth in Canada for its proportionate research impact in all sciences—just behind the University of Toronto, UBC and McGill—and second for collaboration. This is the fifth year in a row that UVic has held this spot or higher. UVic is in 169th place globally for research impact across all sciences.

Leiden ranks UVic first in Canada for its research impact in math and computer science, and third nationally for social sciences and humanities.

For the third year in a row, Leiden ranks UVic fifth in Canada for biomedical and health sciences—a remarkable result for a university without a medical school.

UVic retains its place in the top one per cent of universities in the world and among the top-ranked in Canada for scientific impact.

This year, the Leiden Rankings added a new category for Open Access publications as well—showcasing UVic’s strength in making science and scholarship’s findings accessible and affordable. Nearly half of all UVic publications (46.7 per cent) circulate legally and sustainably in open access journals and repositories—putting UVic just behind McGill and ahead of the University of Toronto in this emerging domain.
