Avery McMichael

Avery McMichael, nee Kester, is an American graduate student working for their MA in Applied Theatre at the University of Victoria. Their work is centered around bringing voice to the stories of queer and disabled individuals, especially around topics of sexual assault and intimate violence. 

 

They received their BA in Applied Theatre from Pacific University in 2018. They received their MFA in Playwriting from the University of Nebraska in 2021. Their MFA research focused on representations of sex on stage and screen, and the disparity between representations of straight cisgender sex versus queer sex.

 

From 2018-2019 they served as Artistic and Development Intern with Portland area theatre company, From the Ground UP!. In 2018 they co-founded the Theatre Viscera project which had one on-stage season in 2018/19 and then moved to a virtual platform due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Theatre Viscera Podcast ran from 2020 through 2023 and featured new works by queer playwrights.
