The School of Social Work within the Faculty of Human and Social Development invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, to commence January 1, 2022, or as negotiated.

The School of Social Work offers an undergraduate (BSW) degree and graduate programs (MSWF, MSWA, MSWI) that emphasize social justice, Indigenous and anti-oppressive approaches to working with communities, families, and individuals. All our programs are fully accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education. UVIC is home to the Centre for Indigenous Research and Community-Led Engagement (CIRCLE) and the Indigenous Mentorship Network of the Pacific Northwest (IMN-PN).

The School and our partners, who are students, staff, sessional instructors and faculty members, are committed to decolonizing, anti-racism, and anti-oppressive work in our leadership and pedagogies, and in research and education.  Our goals are to establish learning opportunities in a supportive on-campus and online environment that promotes equity, respect, responsibility, curiosity, collaboration, risk-taking and creativity.  As a school, we apply a decolonial equity framework that includes an intersectional lens in all that we do academically and administratively.

Candidates from these groups must self-identify in their application and are asked to do so in their cover letter. 

The successful candidate will be expected to teach in the graduate and undergraduate programs, in both the distance on on-campus components, supervise graduate students, conduct research and participate in the administrative structure of the school. We seek applicants to demonstrate a commitment to decolonization in their teaching, research and community activism. Areas of research and teaching that are of particular interest to the School include, but are not limited to, transnationalism, poverty, queer theory, environmental justice and Indigenous pedagogy. Applicants are asked to clearly indicate their area of scholarship and its contribution to social work education.


The School is interested in candidates who:

  • hold a PhD with at least one Social Work degree
  • have 5 or more years of SW practice experience post BSW or MSW degree;
  • demonstrate knowledge and experience of decolonial equity and intersectionality in practice, pedagogy and epistemology;
  • have experience and knowledge of teaching undergraduate and graduate programs;
  • bring to our school and broaden your program of research and scholarship
  • are committed able to articulate how their pedagogical approach fits with the School’s vision as outlined in its mission statement;
  • have experience with face-to-face and diverse online delivery modes, i.e., a familiarity with educational technology learning management systems and web conferencing;
  • are committed to work collaboratively and transparently within the School to meet overall School objectives.
