Global mindset helps co-op student thrive at local business

One of the pillars of the Gustavson School of Business is being international at heart, a value that commerce student Nick Head has been developing from a very young age. Though originally from Victoria, he spent his elementary school days in Winnipeg, travelled to Scotland for middle school, and attended high school in Hawaii. However, when it came time to choose a university, there was really no place like home.

“UVic’s Bachelor of Commerce program stood out to me because of its entrepreneurship specialization,” he says. “I’ve been interested in running my own business since high school, when I started a small tech support business.” 

For his first co-op work term, Nick left his hometown once again to work at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, where he gained experience in sales and customer service, important skills for an up-and-coming entrepreneur. “It was one of the best summers of my life,” he says. “I had the opportunity to meet some amazing people and experience the beauty of the Canadian Rockies.”

After having had such an unforgettable experience working in the hospitality industry, Nick wanted to take on a co-op term that would give him a very different, but equally rewarding experience. He found the right fit when he started a co-op job as a marketing assistant at Used.ca, a Victoria-based online buy and sell platform with community-based websites in over 100 cities around the world.

“Because I want to start my own business one day, I believe that working for a company like Used.ca is a great learning opportunity,” says Nick. “I’ve been able to better understand the challenges of marketing Used.ca’s products in a competitive market, and how real-world business decisions are made.”

After only two co-op terms, Nick has gained an in-depth knowledge of small and large business operations, all while further developing his aptitude and passion for tech. “I would definitely recommend that co-op students try something different for each work term,” says Nick. “After working in Banff, taking on a marketing position for a very different kind of company allowed me to gain valuable experience that just wouldn’t have been possible in the hotel industry.”

Like Used.ca, Nick’s Victoria roots don’t stop him from reaching far and wide to develop a global mindset. In the fall, he’ll be flying off once again—this time to the Stockholm Business School where he will be doing an exchange semester to further develop his skills, passions, and understanding of the business world.
