Mediated agreement ratified

The Board of Governors at University of Victoria and members of CUPE Local 4163 (Component 3) have ratified an agreement under government’s Sustainable Services Negotiating Mandate.

Component 3 of CUPE 4163 represents sessional instructors and music performance instructors at UVic.  Over the course of an academic year, the university employs up to 850 sessional instructors represented by this union.

Details on the agreement will be published in the coming weeks and jointly facilitated education sessions are being scheduled for deans, chairs, and directors.  Highlights of the agreement include:

  • a three-year term (May 1, 2019, to April 30, 2022);
  • general wage increases of 2%, 2% and 2%;
  • new eligibility formula for continuing status;
  • new workforce adjustment language;
  • improved clarity for long-term sessional course assignments;
  • negotiated funding for professional development

At UVic, bargaining has now reached the half-way point.  Agreements have also been reached and ratified with the PEA and the Faculty Association, representing approximately 2,000 employees (or two-thirds of our regular continuing workforce).

The university is committed to reaching new collective agreements with our remaining unions as quickly as possible that meets the needs of our students and employees.  Bargaining with CUPE 951 started in July and we are endeavouring to book dates to bargain with CUPE 917 and Components 1 & 2 of CUPE local 4163 during the fall semester.  Updates on the progress of collective bargaining at each of these tables will be posted on the respective web pages indicated above.
