Campus Gets Giving Tuesday Spirit

Giving Tuesday

It rained…sprinkles!

UVic’s first Giving Tuesday campaign (on Nov. 29) had two goals: to raise money for student-led initiatives and to raise awareness about this global day of giving on campus and in the alumni community.

By the end of Giving Tuesday, the campus and alumni community had raised more than $20,000, far exceeding the initial goal of $5,000.

Outside by the library, student and staff volunteers handed out whip cream and colourful sprinkles as a tasty topping for hot chocolate provided by the UVSS. Another “sprinkle station” in the Student Union Building was also popular.

Between noon and 9 p.m., a task force of student callers phoned hundreds of alumni to ask for their support. Plates of sprinkled cupcakes provided by their manager, Dana Kritsch, kept them smiling through the extra hours.

In the digital world, alumni responded to Giving Tuesday email and social media messages and gave donations online. Almost $6,000 was received online from alumni, staff and faculty.

Three anonymous donors helped triple the impact of this by matching the first $2,500 raised.

This will enable us to give out grants to different student and alumni groups similar to past recipients of alumni grants such as the UVic Global Water Brigades and the Formula SAE team

A huge thank you to everyone who donated, volunteered or helped support Giving Tuesday in some way.
