Percentage Grading

On April 2011, Senate approved recommendations from the Senate Committee on Academic Standards to replace the University's current 9 point grading system with a percentage grading system. The approved grading scale applies to all Faculties at the University. The change provides consistency with other Canadian post secondary institutions, improves interpretation of grades internally and externally and provides clarity for international students and institutions.

Implementation Update:

At the Senate meeting on October 5, 2012, an announcement was made that the planned Phase II development and implementation of the Percentage Grading Project is planned to begin in 2014. This project will include the integration of university systems with other administrative systems to support necessary changes including reporting grades on the official transcript and academic record. The project will be the second most extensive system development that has been undertaken at the University; with the transition to Banner being the largest. Currently, an 18 month development plan has been estimated because the changes required will be extensive and will impact many systems and processes including curriculum, calendar, grading, tuition fee accounting, degree audit, transcript, reports and academic records. The decision to adjust the commencement of Phase II is based on the need to tackle a growing number of priority initiatives that have been scheduled and will provide immediate improvements to service and operational processes for the benefit of students and the campus.

Transition:

As of May 1, 2012, all instructors are required to use the Senate approved percentage grading scale. The undergraduate and graduate grading scales can be found in the memorandum sent to all Chairs, Directors and Deans outlining the transition to the percentage grading scale.

Throughout the transition period, the Learning and Teaching Centre will be collecting questions that will be reviewed by a Percentage Grading Subcommittee. If you have additional questions regarding the transition to percentage grading scale, please forward them to ltc@uvic.ca.

As of May 15, 2012, a number of questions have been asked about the percentage grading scale. The questions and answers can be found in the document below:

A workshop was held on September 7, 2012 to provide information and answer questions from faculty members. For further information, please review the slides from the presentation: Percentage Grading
