Professor Jeremy Webber appointed Dean of the Faculty of Law

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Jeremy Webber as Dean of the Faculty of Law for a five-year term effective July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2018. Professor Webber is an internationally-recognized scholar in the areas of cultural diversity, constitutional theory and indigenous rights. Since 2002, he has held the Canada Research Chair in Law and Society at the University of Victoria. He was a Trudeau Fellow from 2009 to 2012. His contributions to the intellectual life and reputation of the Faculty of Law and the University have been remarkable.

Professor Webber is a highly respected teacher at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. He has mentored and supervised countless students in our J.D. and graduate programs. He brings a wealth of administrative experience to the Dean of Law position. Prior to joining the Faculty of Law, he was Dean of Law at the University of Sydney, Australia. Prior to that, he was the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research in the Faculty of Law at McGill University. At the University of Victoria, Professor Webber was one of the architects of the Graduate Program in Law and Society, and its second Director. He has been an integral member of a number of key faculty committees.

I am sure you will join me in congratulating Professor Webber on his new role and wishing him well.

Sincerely,

Reeta C. Tremblay, PhD

Vice-President Academic and Provost and Chair of the Appointment Committee

2013 Diversity Writing Contest

With the conclusion of the Provost’s Diversity Research Forum on January 31, this year’s Diversity Writing Contest has also drawn to a close.  Once again, the writing contest attracted a number of excellent submissions from UVic students.  Our winning entries touched on topics like mental health, transgender matters, and the international student experience – in short, a true diversity of experience.  The Libraries’ webpage for the Diversity Writing Contest has been updated.  You can read the winning entries at http://library.uvic.ca/events/writingcontest along with a brief biography of the student authors.
