Merit Increments Allocation and Distribution

The university and the Faculty Association have agreed to a change in the merit increment system, which is to be implemented now and used in the current annual salary review process when calculating the 2013/14 salaries of faculty members that take effect on July 1, 2013.
On February 8, 2013 a workshop was held to provide a brief summary of the increment system. A copy of the slides are available here for your information:

Dr. Saul Klein appointed Dean of Peter B. Gustavson School of Business

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Saul Klein as Dean of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business for a five-year term effective July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2017. Dr. Klein is currently the Landsdowne Professor of International Business at the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business. He joined the School in 2001 and has been the champion of the international business area since 2002, and the director of executive programs since 2004. Prior to joining the University of Victoria, he was a professor of the Graduate School of Business at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

Dr. Klein has a strong record of academic leadership with a proven ability to establish priorities and develop strategies to achieve goals. He has a broad understanding of the operations and environment of the School, and has been successful in pursuing collaborative relationships with other business schools, private sector clients and international educational partners. I am positive that with his experience and knowledge the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business will continue to flourish.

I am sure you will join me in congratulating Dr. Klein on his new role and wishing him well.

Dr. A.R. (Elango) Elangovan named 3M National Teaching Fellow

Dr. A.R. (Elango) Elangovan will be honoured at the 2013 3M National Teaching Fellows on June 21.  The fellowship recognizes exceptional achievements and contributions by teacher-scholars across Canada. For further information about the fellowship, please go to UVic's media release found here.

Dr. Andrew Marton appointed Associate Academic Vice-President International

Dr. Howard Brunt and I are extremely happy to announce that Dr. Andrew M. Marton has accepted the appointment of Associate Academic Vice-President International for a five-year term effective August 1, 2012 to June 30, 2017. 

Dr. Marton has a distinguished record of achievement as a researcher, teacher and administrator.  He is currently the Vice-Provost Teaching and Learning and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China.  He is a specialist in Chinese studies whose research has revolved around the study of patterns and processes of spatial economic transformation in China’s extended metropolitan regions with a particular focus on the lower Yangzi delta.  His other research interests in China include studies of administrative restructuring and urban and regional development, curricular reforms and geographical education, and the emergence of new urban spaces for the visual arts and other creative industries in Shanghai and Ningbo.

I am sure that you join us in welcoming Dr. Marton to his new role and wishing him well.

Dr. Blackstone reappointed as Dean of Fine Arts

I am delighted to announce that Dr. Sarah Blackstone has been reappointed as the Dean of Fine Arts for a further five-year term effective July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2017. 

Dr. Blackstone, a Professor in the Department of Theatre, is a highly regarded scholar and a dedicated university leader.  All individuals who were consulted by the Committee spoke of Dr. Blackstone’s high level of personal integrity and commitment to the Faculty.  During extensive consultations, the Committee found Dr. Blackstone has proven to be an extremely effective leader who has been successful in advocating and communicating the diverse identity of the Faculty of Fine Arts to the campus and to the broader community.  Both I, and the Committee, are confident that she will continue to bring integrity, leadership, and sincere dedication to the arts, art education, and the role of the Dean over the next five years.

Dr. David Capson appointed new Dean of Graduate Studies

I am delighted to announce that Dr. David Capson has accepted the appointment of Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies for a five-year term effective August 1, 2012 to June 30, 2017. Dr. Capson is currently the Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at McMaster University. He served as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies at McMaster from 2001 to 2008. Dr. Capson is a specialist in the development of algorithms and architectures for high speed image analysis with application to engineering problems; sensory-based servo system design, multi-camera, distributed imaging systems, sub-space methods for image data reduction. He has held NSERC research funding continuously since 1985 and has received several teaching awards. He is also a registered professional engineer in the province of Ontario since 1987.

Dr. Capson has a distinguished record of achievement as a researcher, teacher and administrator. His referees indicate his sincere commitment to students, and particularly to graduate students.

Drs. Wulff and Boulanger named new Canada Research Chairs. Dr. Ostry renewed as Chair.

Drs. Wulff and Boulanger are the latest UVic faculty members to be awarded Canada Research Chairs. Dr. Wulff is the new Canada Research Chair in Bioactive Small Molecule Synthesis and Dr. Boulanger is the new Canada Research Chair in Molecular Interactions and Structural Biology. As a national strategy, the Canada Research Chairs program helps Canadian universities strengthen their position as global leaders in research and development. Also renewed this year is Dr. Aleck Ostry as Canada Research Chair in the Social Determinants of Community Health. The university now has 38 filled Canada Research Chairs.
