UVic is committed to equity, diversity, social justice and fostering a welcoming and diverse learning, teaching and working environment. These are essential elements in achieving excellence in research and education.
As members of a diverse and dynamic learning community, we each have a role to play in creating safe, supportive, inclusive and healthy learning environments that foster mutual respect and civility, and that recognize that people are our primary strength.

VPAC equity and diversity initiatives
The adviser to the provost on equity and diversity works in collaboration with the provost, the VPAC diversity and equity steering committee and other offices on campus to identify barriers to access and accommodation for faculty, librarians, staff and students and to coordinate and communicate equity and diversity across campus. At UVic we strive to enhance access by creating spaces and conditions for dialogue and the expression of all voices.
VPAC awards seed funding for select new projects and events around campus that focus on enhancing equity, diversity and inclusion. Past initiatives have included:
- A speaking engagement by Leeza Edwards on a Trans-spirituality Gender Journey
- The "African Eloquent" 2010 Youth Celebration
- "Out of the Shadows and into the Sunshine" A Mental Health Information Fair
- Words from the Elders: Snuw'uyulth Teachings
- Explore your Space: Gender and Sexuality in Academics
