The University of Victoria is committed to increasing its investment in career and professional development in emerging and existing leaders within all aspects of the annual cycle of university activities. As stated in UVic's Strategic Plan, a Vision for the Future - Building on Excellence, Objective 6(g) speaks to broadening the scope of our in-house training programs for new and existing chairs, directors and deans.

The Office of the Vice-President Academic and Provost (VPAC) holds various workshops annually for academic leaders to articulate the alignment of policies and practices with leadership preparation and needs as well as with institutional resources in ways that complement our mission, values and culture. We believe that a coordinated academic leadership program provides effective strategies and tools for academic leaders for guiding their units forward.

This section of the VPAC website offers a variety of resources including links and contact information for many of the key areas that you may deal with during your term as dean, university librarian, chair, or director. A series of workshops that blend presentations, case studies, thought-provoking debate and analysis with self-reflection have been carefully selected to assist you on strategic planning in all aspects of academic administration. The workshop topics are offered on a rotating basis annually and include: faculty recruitment, tenure and promotion, accessing data, privacy and security, career progression, faculty annual review and merit, managing faculty sick leave, return to work and accommodation, fostering critical and respectful discourse etc. You can register for upcoming events by clicking on the link below. 

This is also an opportunity to build and maintain a network of peers for ongoing leadership challenges and support and to learn from experiences of other leaders. Our goal is to support you in ways that allow you to achieve your highest potential.
