Administrative and professional experience

Dr. Andrew M. Marton was appointed  as the Associate Vice-President International  in August,  2012.  Prior to his appointment at UVic, Dr. Marton has been with the University of Nottingham in various roles since 1999.  He started his career in the UK as the founding director of Nottingham's Institute for Contemporary Chinese Studies during which time he led the strategic development of a highly successful Chinese studies teaching and research programme which culminated in the creation of the new School of Contemporary Chinese Studies on 1 January 2007. He was seconded from the U.K. campus of the University of Nottingham in 2007 and moved to China to become Ningbo's Dean of Undergraduate Studies at the University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China. In 2010, he was also appointed as Vice-Provost Teaching and Learning in addition to his duties as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

Research interests

Dr. Marton is a specialist in Chinese studies and his research has revolved around the study of patterns and processes of spatial economic transformation in China’s extended metropolitan regions with a particular focus on the lower Yangzi delta. His other research interests in China include studies of administrative restructuring and urban and regional development, curricular reforms and geographical education, and the emergence of new urban spaces for the visual arts and other creative industries in Shanghai and Ningbo.

Dr. Marton received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Geography from the University of British Columbia in 1983, Postgraduate Professional Teacher Qualification and Master of Arts jointly in Education and Geography from the University of Victoria in 1984 and 1990 respectively, and his PhD in Geography from the University of British Columbia in 1996.

Reporting to the Vice-President Academic and Provost and the Vice-President Research, the Associate Vice-President International (AVP International) works with the relevant executive portfolios to ensure the success of international objectives. These include partnership and exchange agreements, international teaching and research opportunities, international mobility, supporting recruitment and admission of international students, and programs for international student success. The AVP International oversees the International Office.

The International Office represents the University of Victoria internationally, facilitates and oversees international activties and programs, and provides support to incoming international and exchange students, and UVic students who undertake mobility experiences abroad. It is responsible for operationalizing and contributing to strategic planning for key dimensions of internationalization at UVic. The International Office supports academic and research units in building effective partnerships with institutions abroad.

Key priorities for the AVP International include:

  • Leading the articulation and development of an international vision and international strategic plan for the University with direction and support from the International Coordination Group;
  • Collaboration with the AVPs of Student Affairs, Academic Planning, Research, and Alumni and Development to support and enhance key international dimensions of their portfolios;
  • Identify international teaching and research opportunities and promote those opportunities with appropriate units across campus;
  • Mobilize resources, including fundraising from alumni and friends, and develop corporate and institutional partnerships for international initiatives; and
  • Lead the development of structures to communicate, facilitate and evaluate the success of the international agenda within the University and the wider community.
