UVic is part of your community

vikesUVic is a great place to visit, whether you're searching for research expertise, looking to access some of the finest library resources in the country, wanting to hire one of our many talented students or interested in tapping the intellectual and creative resources of one of Canada's leading comprehensive research universities.

You can also take advantage of the many events and activities that are open to community members. Take in a play at the Phoenix Theatre or a film at Cinecenta. Stroll Finnerty Gardens in the spring when the rhododendrons are at their best, or make our trail system part of your daily routine. Register for a community library card or recreation classes, or support the Vikes teams at their home games.

If lifelong learning is your passion, the Continuing Studies division offers an enticing line-up of non-degree programs year-round. And if you're from out of town, you can even stay on campus.

Going with the flow

If climate change means more extreme rainfall, as scientists predict, how should we prepare to cope with all the extra water? Should we be installing larger storm water pipes? Diverting streams? Stockpiling sandbags? Chris Jensen (pictured above), a master’s student in geography at the University of Victoria, thinks there’s a better way. He’s investigating how to manage rainwater where it falls - on individual buildings, streets, gardens and subdivisions - rather than directing it into storm water systems buried under city streets.
