James' research and teaching areas are political ecology, political theory, and social movement strategy. Along with Ronnie Lipschutz he co-authored the book Globalization, Governmentality, and Global Politics (Routledge, 2005). His work has appeared in the journals New Political Science, Studies in Political Economy, Alternatives, and Theory and Event. He has also written for Waging Nonviolence, New Politics, open Democracy, Tyee.ca, Rabble.ca, and The Arrow: A Journal of Wakeful Society, Culture, and Politics. He received the 2010 Andy Farquharson Award for Teaching Excellence, and the 2014 Social Science Teaching Excellence Award.
