Interim Leadership Team

Marianna Mazza, Certified Medical Office Assistant, Leadership training
Marianna has been our Office Manager at UHS since 2011; she oversees the medical office assistants, coordinates on-site IT support for our Electronic Medical Record (EMR), and is the administrative assistant to the Director. With a 20 year work history in health care, she started at UVic in 2004 with the Island Medical program as Program Administrator for Years 1-2 Family Practice & Clinical Skills curriculum. In her spare time, Marianna provides English tutoring classes for registered International students attending schools in Victoria. She also has a passion of building and designing new homes and has completed 4 new homes in the last 10 years.

Kun Liu

Kun Liu

Kun joined UHS in 2016 as the Business Officer. His position has core responsibilities for financial operations, and business process reviews, in addition to providing clinical information analytics and supporting quality improvement strategies. Kun has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from University of Windsor, and a Post Degree Accounting Diploma from Camosun College; and he is currently working on his CPA designation. He enjoys travelling, taking photos, and fishing.

Physicians at UHS:

Dr. Kim Foster, BSc, MD, CCFP

Dr. Kim Foster, BSc, MD, CCFP

Dr. Foster received her medical school training and Family Medicine Residency from McMaster University and came to UVic to practice family medicine in 2012. Prior to this she worked at clinics in Ontario, Alberta and Vancouver. She is the lead physician at UHS, and has particular interest in health and wellness. She is committed to helping students prevent disease and achieve their best through a healthy lifestyle of diet, exercise, sleep and stress management. She also contributes to our campus planning and health promotion for the student population as a whole. You might find Dr. Foster blogging about health issues, when she is not busy chasing after her two young sons, as she is active in social media (Twitter and Instagram).

Dr. William Dyson, BA, MA, PhD, MD, CCFP

Dr. Dyson graduated from McMaster medical school in 1975; although by that time he had already worked as a lab biochemist and plant physiologist. He soon after came to UVic and with his passion for science and medicine worked half-time teaching physiology in Nursing and half-time as a physician at UHS. Alongside Dr. Jack Petersen they developed and grew our Health Services program on campus, and he took over as lead physician from 2000-2010. He now works part-time, as he says these are his “sunset years” yet continues to champion student health, while having time to pursue his love for photography and fishing. He still often does his campus run during lunch break, as fitness and good food are an important regime! 

Dr. James Felix, MD, CCFP

Dr. Felix graduated medical school from University of Alberta and completed his Residency at Queen’s University. He practiced as a locum family physician in Vancouver from 2006-12 and came to UVic Health Services in 2013. He has interests in health promotion, including the essential nature of nutrition, exercise and connectedness in good health. He is currently a co-lead in mental health clinical care, and initiated the ADHD group clinic with campus partners. He is a great teacher and has interests in technology resources. He also enjoys the balance that simple play can bring to life, especially with his two young kids.

Dr. Oona Hayes, BASc, MD, CCFP

Dr. Hayes completed her medical school training at McMaster University and did her Family Practice Residency at UBC. She was in full service family practice from 2001-09 and continues to teach part-time in the Island Medical program. She joined UVic Health Services in 2011, and is currently the co-lead for mental health clinical care. She helped develop the BC HIV testing guidelines in 2014, has an interest in sexual health, including transgender care. She is an avid reader and recommends the book “The Brain that Changes Itself”; she is also a mom and wife, and an aspiring runner. 

Dr. Catherine Gray, MD, CCFP

Dr. Gray received her medical school training from University of Alberta. She worked as a locum physician for a few years before joining the Canadian Forces and completing 7 years of service as a physician. She was overseas in Syria/Israel and Germany in 2006/2007. She left the service in 2010 when baby number three arrived and came to practice at UVic in 2011. She has a special interest in mental health and women’s health and enjoys working with students with their inquiring and intelligent interests and their own health and wellness. For a little insider knowledge, Dr. Gray has run 7 half marathons in two years, loves to paint, do yoga, and has a flare for interior design and cooking!

Dr. Marni Brydon, MDCM, CCFP

Dr. Brydon completed medical school at McGill University in 2001 and Family Medicine residency training at Queen’s University in 2003, and then did a further 6 months of training in Women’s Health, focusing on low risk obstetrics, contraception, and sexual health. She worked in Calgary for 10 years doing community family practice and maternity care.  Dr. Brydon joined the team here at Health Services in 2014 where she continues to include Women’s and Sexual Health in her practice and also enjoys working with patients on improving their overall health. Being new to the West Coast, she loves spending time outdoors, hiking and kayaking with her kids.

Dr. Jessica Fry, BSc, MD, MPH, CCFP

Dr. Fry completed her medical school training at UBC and her family medicine residency in Victoria. She has worked as a locum family physician in Victoria, and also volunteered in Nepal and South Africa. She has an interest in public health and adolescent medicine, and completed her Master of Public Health degree to gain more expertise in health promotion and population health. When not working, she loves spending her days’ outdoors and being active, which generally involves running after her two young children

Dr. Lindsay Warder BSc, HBOR, BSc (PT), MD, CCFP

Dr. Lindsay Warder BSc, HBOR, BSc (PT), MD, CCFP

Dr. Warder received her medical school training from UBC and was part of the second Island Medical Program class. She completed residency in family medicine at Queen's University and has since worked in numerous family practices, the Island Sexual Health clinic, and has been involved in teaching medical student and residents in Kingston and Victoria. She joined the UVic Health Services team in 2015 and loves a varied practice including sexual health and infectious diseases. In her previous life, she worked as a paediatric physiotherapist. She is happiest running, cycling, hiking, camping and playing in the outdoors with her family.

Dr. Blair Meeker BSc MB BCh BAO CCFP

After attending UVic for her undergraduate degree, Dr. Meeker completed her medical school training in Cork Ireland and then moved to Newfoundland for her residency. After working as a family physician in rural Newfoundland for several years, she moved back to Victoria. She began working at UVic Health Services in 2016. Her interests include sexual health and preventative medicine. When she isn't working she loves cooking, travel, and time with her two young children.

Nurses at UHS:

Cathy Buchan, RN, BScN

Cathy Buchan, RN, BScN

Cathy received her nursing diploma from BCIT and degree from UBC. She has worked as an RN in a number of health settings, including Critical Care, Outpost Nursing in Inuit communities, Public Health Nursing Comox Valley Nursing Center, School Nurse at Shawnigan Lake School, and in Home Nursing Care. She joined our UHS team in 2011 as an RN in the primary health clinic. She takes the lead nurse role for mental health coordination and is the care coordinator for a special project on Psychiatry and Mental Health integration. She has raised four children, and in her spare time, she has travelled extensively!

Chelsea , RN, BN, BSc

Chelsea , RN, BN, BSc

Chelsea completed her undergraduate degree in Science at UVic and then moved to Alberta where she completed her Bachelor’s of Nursing at the University of Calgary. After working in various hospital units in Alberta and BC including pediatrics, medical/surgical, maternity and women’s health, Chelsea worked in community health settings that included infectious disease, addictions and mental health treatment. Chelsea returned to work at UVic Health Services in 2015 and has the lead nurse role for our public health services. She particularly enjoys the outdoors and spending time with her family.

Karen Skripitsky, RN, BScN

Karen Skripitsky, RN, BScN

Karen received her nursing degree from University of Alberta and has worked in a variety of settings; including emergency care, rural community health, outpost nursing, and clinical education. In 2011, she took a position with Red Deer College to provide health and wellness education to students and staff. She moved to Vancouver Island and came to UVic Health Services in 2013, where she now serves as a clinical RN and has a lead nurse role for sexual health coordination. She and her family love exploring and living the island life!

Kim Daly, RN, MA, PhD

Kim completed her PhD in the School of Nursing at UBC. She has worked as a counsellor at the Victoria Youth Clinic since its inception, and is currently the lead for transgender care. She has particular interests in sexual health and gender. Kim comes to UVic Health Services to coordinate Health and Wellness for campus student health; she loves to help others succeed and enjoys teaching and promoting student wellbeing. She is dedicated to crossfit, cycling, and her family - three spirited children, one quirky partner, and a black cat. 

Annie Lucas, RN(C), BscN

Annie Lucas, RN(C), BscN

Annie completed her nursing degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 2012. After graduating, Annie returned to BC and completed certifications in Contraceptive and STI management. At Health Services, Annie works in the clinic and in student engagement and health promotion on campus. Annie also coordinates the Student Health Ambassador and Peer Educator (SHAPE) volunteer program. She has previously worked for the Island Sexual Health Society, and conducted the Canadian Sexual Health Survey for UBC. She enjoys biking, adventuring, traveling and laughing.

Barbara Fox, NP(F) (BC, Canada), FNP-BC (US), MSN

Barbara received her Master’s in community health nursing and family nurse practitioner credentials from the Medical College, Virginia Commonwealth University. She has worked at UVic since 2011 as a full time Assistant Teaching Professor in the School of Nursing Graduate Nurse Practitioner Program, and continues to practice as a clinician for some hours at UHS in family practice. She has particular interest in wellness, health promotion and sexual health. Prior to 2011, she worked at Island Health as an NP in senior’s health and spent 20 years practicing in California with a focus on family practice and women’s health. She enjoys the outdoors, including hiking, trekking, cycling, and exploring the Gulf Islands by boat and kayak.

Katherine Bertoni MN, NP (F), CDE

Katherine joined UVIC in April 2014 as an Assistant Teaching Professor in the School of Nursing Graduate Nurse Practitioner Program, and also practices as a clinician at UHS in family practice. She received her Master’s of Nursing and Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner certification from Athabasca University in 2008. Prior to joining UVIC, Katherine worked at Hamilton Health Sciences in Hamilton, Ontario as an NP in the Adult Diabetes Care and Research Clinic and at McMaster University as an Assistant Clinical Professor. She has a particular interest in diabetes care and is a certified diabetic educator. Since moving to British Columbia, Katherine has developed a great appreciation of the outdoors.

Medical Office Staff:

Vimalavinothini Ganeshkumar (Vino), Certified Medical Office Assistant

Vino is a Medical Office Assistant with experience in customer service and advanced level business studies. She has previously worked in specialist offices.  Her primary role at UHS is reception, where she provides a warm welcome to students and keeps the flow of patients on time in our busy appointment schedule. She also helps with billing and scanning in the electronic medical record.  Vino is a volunteer at her church and loves dancing.

Jett is a Medical Office Assistant, with 20 years’ experience including many years in psychiatry and managing a sexual health clinic. Her training and experience as a peer counsellor has been conducive for client and colleague relations. At UHS, her primary role is Billing and Referrals Clerk. She enjoys playing a positive part in student’s health experience and appreciates collaborative team work.

UPDATE, April 28, 2017. Jett received her Certified Medical Office Assistant certificate today after successfully completing all required courses. It only took her a year doing online education while working full time. Way to go, Jett! CONGRATULATIONS!

Theresa is a Medical Office Assistant at UHS, and her primary role at UHS is to manage the appointments and referrals for Psychiatry services, in which she supports 4-5 psychiatry schedules. She has considerable past experience working in a variety of doctor’s offices, from walk-in clinics to addiction services, and has served all ages from babies to seniors. She also has an artistic flare and enjoys working with recycled wood, upcycling and painting old items into new. 

Geraldine Kiss, Certified Medical Office Assistant

Geri is a Medial Office Assistant at UHS, and her primary role is to facilitate timely patient flow in the clinic, including supporting physician efficiency, changeover of exam rooms and equipment, and keeping medical supplies well stocked. She has past experience of working in a busy dermatology clinic for many years. Geri always brings a cheerful outlook and energetic approach to her daily interactions with patients and practitioners. With the long corridor at the clinic and serving well over 100 patients per day, Geri’s daily steps exceed recommended exercise guidelines!

Carla Garton, DBA, Medical Office Assistant

Carla is a Medical Office Assistant with 20 years of customer service experience, a diploma in Business Administration from UVic and past work experience in the Ministry of Health. At UHS her primary role is reception where she assists students in person and over the phone with registration and appointments, and provides some assistance with data entry of medical and operational expenses. She is also an active member of our Joint Occupational Health and Safety committee and Staff Personnel Benefits committee. She takes greatest joy from raising her two children, and lives a healthy lifestyle, including accomplishing half and full marathons; as well, she has been a long-time volunteer folk dancer with the Victoria Edelweiss dance group.

Stephanie is a Medical Office Assistant and comes with 10 years of MOA experience working for two podiatrists in Victoria. Stephanie joined UHS in 2016, after a six-year break at home raising her daughter. Her primary role at UHS is reception, where she assists students in person and over the phone with registration and appointments, and keeps the flow of patients in our busy appointment schedule . Stephanie always brings a cheerful attitude,  and feels lucky working for the team as she enjoys talking to people.  She is a big lifelong music fan, especially passionate about live music in any form. 

Psychiatry:

Dr. Thorpe graduated from McMaster and the University of Western Ontario. As a psychiatrist, she practiced in London, Ontario for 23 years with a primary interest in young adult psychotherapy. She joined our team at UVic Health Service in the fall of 2013, as an Island Health on-site psychiatrist. In addition to providing psychiatry care, she has a key role in linking with our UHS physician team for clinical consults and coordinates the triage and patient flow for improved psychiatry access. 

Dr. Cliff Duncalf, Psychiatrist

Dr. Cliff Duncalf, Psychiatrist

Dr. Duncalf has worked in the area of mental health for 20 years.  He has been involved in the University of Victoria Health service team for over 10 years.  He has particular interests in the mental health problems of young adults and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.  He has championed the Eating Disorder clinic at UVic and helped to strengthen the partnership with Island Health and the Ministry of Children and Family Development. He enjoys working with colleagues in an interdisciplinary clinical setting and teaching medical students.

Dr. Ildiko Lorincz

Dr. Lorincz graduated with degrees from McMaster University, Ontario and The University of Sydney, Australia. She completed Psychiatry training in Australia where she lived and worked for 11 years. She has recently returned to Canada to make a life in Victoria and has a passion for working with young people. She joined our team in March 2016 as an on-site Psychiatrist and is interested in providing care to students of all ages and backgrounds. Dr. Lorincz has a passion for music and travel and she loves to cook!
