Sara Mooi - Chemistry - Working in UVic lab

For Sara Mooi (chemistry), working as a research assistant with UVic professor Tom Fyles (chemistry) was an exciting and engaging challenge. Under Fyles’ supervision, Sara was able to create five kilograms of an anti-fouling agent used to stop barnacle growth on boats, docks, pipes and in other aquatic environments.

“My favourite part of the job was knowing that the product of the work term was important to my supervisor and, in turn, the environment,” Sara says. “It feels awesome to know that what we worked on is being tested in Florida right now and could be of real use,” Sara says, proud that her project was a success.

The job involved a complicated synthesis process, and Sara found herself working shoulder-to shoulder with Fyles. “This was a big synthesis, so the issues of reaction planning, safety and manipulation required that I be involved hands-on at various points,” says Fyles, who also noted that Sara worked quickly and efficiently without his supervision as well.

Sara is unsure about her future, but is interested in pursuing a career in medicine. She's especially interested in pharmacy, but still narrowing her options. Having gained skills and work experience through her co-op work terms, particularly with Fyles, she feels better prepared to find the right job.

“Whatever feels right,” she says. “I think the key is to keep trying different things, until you find your place.”
