Linghong Lu - Mathematics and Statistics

Lu's co-op experience provided her with an amazing opportunity to be part of the Cancer Genome Atlas project. The project was the first large-scale genomics project funded by the United States government's National Institutes of Health to accelerate the understanding of the genetics of cancer using innovative genome analysis technologies.

Her main responsibility was to work closely with both internal and external members involved in this project, and make sure the analysis results were sent to the various project repositories in a timely manner. In preparation for repository submissions, Lu wrote programs to collect, reformat, and rename files, and for assembling the meta data that needed to be submitted along with the analysis results.

Of the UVic experience, Linghong responds, "The work experience opened my eyes to a whole new world. All the things I learned at the Genome Science Center, including technical skills and interpersonal skills, were valuable lessons that will benefit me for the rest of my life."
