Message from the Dean of Science

Dean LipsonRob Lipson
Dean of Science

Welcome to the Faculty of Science at the University of Victoria, by all measures one of the best in Canada.

The Faculty has two missions, teaching and research, and we excel in both.  We pride ourselves on the many experiential opportunities that are available to students, ranging from labs and field schools, to going to sea.  Indeed undergraduate students in our six departments get hands on training from day one. Our lecture sections are small enough that students get to know their professors and their peers. A highly successful, elective co-operative education program gives students the opportunity to combine theory with practice, a plus whether they are headed for the job market, graduate school or professional school.

Our professors are tops in their research fields, whether one measures the number and impact of papers published, the amount of research funding, the quality and scope of infrastructure, or national and international reputation. That's very good news for our graduate students as well; an MSc or a PhD from our faculty is one worth having. From the atom to the universe, from the cell to the ecosystem, from the theoretical to the applied, UVic scientists and mathematicians do it all, and do it well.

If you are looking for an excellent education, for research partnerships, or for employment opportunities, look no further. We offer great science and science programs, in state-of-the-art buildings, on a friendly campus, in a city that offers arts, culture, sports and the great outdoors all year round. As a Science undergraduate you will be part of a talented cohort who contributes enormously to the life of the Faculty. In recognition of these academic achievements we annually place the top 10% of the graduating class and the top 10% of the student cohort at each level on the Dean’s List. We hope you will join us.
