SEOS has pioneered, in Canada, the establishment of a research focus in Earth System Science. While our expertise can be categorized within the core disciplines of geology, geochemistry, geophysics, oceanography and atmospheric science, our research strength lies in our interdisciplinary approach in studying the Earth and its Environment.
SEOS faculty and students investigate the principal cycles and interactions between ancient and modern Earth systems of core-mantle, lithosphere, ocean, atmosphere, and biosphere, centred around these interrelated themes:
- Biogeochemical Cycles: Coogan, Cullen, Gillis, Hamme, Pedersen, Pospelova, Varela, Whiticar
- Climate-Ocean Dynamics: Hamme, Klymak, Monahan, Weaver
- Earth System Evolution: Canil, Coogan, Gillis, Goldblatt, Johnston, Pedersen, Pospelova, Spence, Van der Flier-Keller, Weaver
- Marine Environment and Ecosystems: Cullen, Dosso, Dower, Juniper , Pospelova, Tunnicliffe, Varela
Most faculty are involved in more than one research theme and commonalities between research groups abound in both tools used and approaches.
In addition to research facilities operated by individual researchers, SEOS operates the ICP-MS and Laser Ablation facility.
