Orthoptera

CONGRATULATIONS to Dr. Neville Winchester (Biology SLI & Geography Adjunct professor): just published in Science (December 14) Dr. Winchester is a coauthor (see Basset et al. and see the cover) of a paper that now provides a more reliable estimates of total arthropod species richness in a tropical rainforest in Panama. Arthropods are the most diverse group of terrestrial animal species, yet estimates of the total number of arthropod species have varied widely, especially for tropical forests.  Intensive sampling of a half hectare of forest yielded just over 6000 arthropod species. Scaling up this result to the whole forest suggests that the total species diversity lies between 23,000 and 35,000 species and that 17,000 species per hectare exist. The BC Government declared the 2010-2011 school year the "BC Year of Science", hoping to encourage young people to pursue an education in science in order to prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow. The goal is to engage young British Columbians in science by highlighting how science works and why it matters, who scientists are, and the kind of work they do. The UVic Faculty of Science is developing monthly science activities for BC youth as well as short interviews with UVic scientists. The June entry features Biology faculty member Dr. Terri Lacourse: http://web.uvic.ca/sciweb/
