Starting a company?

Faculty, staff and students that are interested in starting a company or social innovation can contact UVic’s Innovation Centre for Entrepreneurs (ICE). ICE is a university-wide initiative that started in the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business to help new ventures succeed with a structured program that includes guidance and mentorship from experienced community advisors.
Licensing technologies
Licensing is an important way for industry partners to help bring academic innovations to the public. It also provides a framework to help the university recoup the costs of patenting innovations and direct revenues toward new research projects.
Research Partnerships and Knowledge Mobilization facilitates the licensing of UVic technologies to industry and negotiates option agreements and licenses in a way that benefits both the university and the commercial partner. UVic uses industry-standard licensing practices to ensure a streamlined, efficient process and prides itself on working diligently with industry partners to accommodate the unique needs of particular companies and market sectors.
The following is an example of how a licensing relationship with UVic might proceed:
- A company provides us with the letter of interest and a brief profile of company business.
- We assess the proposal and determine licensing opportunity.
- We set up an initial meeting with the company contact to discuss the scope of licensing.
- We prepare a term sheet or a draft of a standard license agreement.
- Both parties negotiate and agree on the license terms.
- We finalize the license agreement with the agreed terms.
- License agreement is signed
