Message in a bottle
Alcohol spells trouble for many and that’s where clinical psychologist Dr. Tim Stockwell comes in. He studies drinking patterns and their consequences across BC as part of a major national project to monitor alcohol, drug and tobacco use. Stockwell is director of UVic’s Centre for Addictions Research of BC, which studies substance use, harm reduction and addiction. Learn more about health research at UVic.
A business case for change
Climate change offers opportunities for businesses to gain a competitive edge by “going green” and reducing their carbon footprint. But that’s only half the story, says UVic’s Monika Winn, an international leader in socially and environmentally sustainable business strategies. The other more daunting question is—how can businesses adapt to the actual physical impacts of climate change?

Weathering climate change
As climate change intensifies, how will sensitive coastal landscapes be altered and what can we do to adapt? UVic physical geographer Ian Walker is assessing how coastal erosion and other climate change impacts are affecting beach-dune systems, First Nations village and burial sites, and coastal infrastructure in three popular BC national parks. What social and cultural factors lead some Aboriginal communities to cope better than others with health issues such as diabetes, teenage suicides, HIV and heart disease?
