Research Description

Dr. Rudnyckyj examines the relationship between political economy and Islam in contemporary Indonesia. He is specifically interested in contemporary projects of "spiritual reform" that see economic development as a problem that requires religious interventions. His previous research projects examined the networks and institutions that enable transnational labor migration from Indonesia through the Indian and Pacific Ocean regions and the political economy of urban space in contemporary Jakarta. His research has been supported by Fulbright-Hays, the Social Science Research Council, and the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research.
