UVic was named a Research University of the Year by Research Infosource in 2009. Research Infosource says UVic has “demonstrated superior achievement in earning research income and in publishing research in leading Canadian and international scientific journals.” UVic placed third among Canadian comprehensive universities, a spot it has held for seven consecutive years.
Each year, UVic ranks as one of Canada’s top universities, and for the last three years Maclean’s magazine has ranked UVic either first or second in the national comprehensive university category.

Internal funding opportunities
Tenured or tenure-track faculty can receive research and research-related travel support. They may also use their professional development allowance funds to support their research programs.
Other research support includes:
- Internal research grants – seed grants to help faculty prepare for larger external grants
- Research grant in lieu of salary - under Revenue Canada guidelines certain research expenses paid out of a faculty member’s salary are given tax-free status.
- Scholarly research and artistic performance travel grants - to assist faculty members to present their work at conferences and other scholarly performances.
Grants facilitation
Grants crafting support is available at the faculty level. Each faculty has devised a grants facilitation strategy to best fit its researchers’ needs.

The Strategic Research Plan (SRP) identifies UVic’s research directions and areas of strategic priority on which to build the institutional research capacity. The SRP also guides UVic’s strategic resource allocation, especially how the Canada Research Chair (CRC) and Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) programs will be used to enhance our capabilities.
