Research chairs
Research chairs at UVic
Research Chairs are world-class faculty whose positions are supported by targeted funding from a funding agency or benefactor.
Research Chair positions are used to attract and retain the best research talent from around the world. Research Chairholders advance the frontiers of knowledge in their fields through their research and teaching.

The Canada Research Chairs program helps universities to attract and retain the best talent from around the world, assisting universities like the University of Victoria to achieve research excellence in natural sciences and engineering, health sciences, and social sciences and humanities.
Chairholders advance the frontiers of knowledge in their fields, not only through their own work, but also by teaching and supervising students and coordinating the work of other researchers.
UVic currently holds 36 Canada Research Chairs:

The NSERC Industrial Research Chairs program:
- assists universities in building on existing strengths to achieve the critical mass required for a major research endeavour in science and engineering of interest to industry; and/or
- assists in the development of research efforts in fields that have not yet been developed in Canadian universities but for which there is an important industrial need; and
- provides an enhanced training environment for graduate students and, where appropriate, postdoctoral fellows, by exposing them to research challenges unique to industry and the opportunity for significant ongoing interactions with the industrial partner(s).
Current:
- Dr. Asit Mazumder: Management of Drinking Water
Former:
- Dr. John Barclay: Cryofuel Systems
- Dr. Ross Chapman: Ocean Acoustics
- Dr. Stan Dosso: Ocean Acoustics
- Dr. Barry Glickman: Biotechnology
- Dr. Wolfgang Hoefer: Radio Frequency Engineering
- Dr. David Levin: Biotechnology
- Dr. Real Roy: Management of Drinking Water
- Dr. Maria Stuchly: Electromagnetic Fields and Living Systems
Endowed academic positions are established through the generosity of benefactors who understand the need to support research excellence while providing programs and special initiatives that promote enlightened inquiry and discourse with students.
Endowed positions attract distinguished scholars of international calibre and bring distinction to the individual holding the chair, the university and the benefactor.
