Committees and boards

Chaired by the Vice-President Research, the main purpose of these committees is to advise the Office of the Vice-President Research, feedback important information to faculty members, and help raise the internal and external profile of research at UVic:

Administered by the Office of Research Services with a focus on the regulation of research ethics:

  • Human Research Ethics Board (see tab below)
  • Animal Care Committee (see tab below)

UVic also has three corporate entities related to research. Each of the corporate entities has a Board of Directors with representation from government, industry and other institutions.

Mission: To advise and assist the Office of the Vice-President Research in fulfilling its service, policy and planning roles.

Membership includes associate deans of research (or equivalent) from each faculty.

The committee serves as a two-way communication and information channel between the UVic research community and the Vice-President Research and helps to raise the internal and external profile of the contributions of the UVic research community. The committee meets approximately four times per year.

Membership includes the directors of each of the university’s research centres and research entities.

Purpose: to advise and assist the Office of the Vice President Research in fulfilling its service, policy and planning roles.
The COCD has been established to provide advice to the Associate Vice-President Research (AVPR) regarding the research enterprise at UVic in general, and in particular the work undertaken by the research centres. The primary role of the committee is consultative and its membership broadly reflects the key facets of research at UVic.

The committee serves as a two-way communication and information channel between the UVic research community and the Office of the Vice-President Research to raise the internal and external profile of the contributions of the UVic research community. The council meets five times per year to discuss topics of mutual interest.

Terms of Reference:

All research involving human participants must receive approval from the Human Research Ethics Board (HREB). This approval is required both before and during the recruitment and data collection phases of the study.

Mandate: to ensure that all human research is conducted in accordance with the highest ethical standards and that the public, the researchers, and the university are all protected from harm.

University policies and procedures comply with Tri-Council Policy Statement on the Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans.

All research at the University involving animals, whether laboratory or field-based, must receive approval from the Animal Care Committee (ACC). This approval is required both before and throughout the study period.

Mandate: to ensure that all research with animals is conducted in accordance with the highest ethical and humane standards and that the animals, the public, the researchers, and the university are all protected from harm.

University policies and procedures comply with the policies of the Canadian Council on Animal Care.
