2012-05-24 - Lecture/Seminar - Ecological Governance Abroad and at Home: Water Management Lessons from Semi-Arid Brazil to Canada's "Wet" Coast
Description:Guest speakers Dr. Nathalie Gravel and Kevin Reilly will be exploring ecological governance approaches and water management initiatives in the Brazilian Northeast and B.C.’s Capital Regional District. The presentations will be followed by a moderated roundtable discussion.

Dr. Nathalie Gravel is a geographer and a professor at Université Laval in Québec City. She will be presenting on her water governance research in the Brazilian Northeast. In this semi-arid region, civil society and levels of government have been working together to improve water management strategies to counter water shortages, including rainwater harvesting and efforts to reduce water demand. Nathalie will explore the paths being taken by rural communities to move toward environmental governance and ecological citizenship in this region.

Kevin Reilly is the Demand Management Coordinator for B.C.’s Capital Regional District. Bringing his local perspective, Kevin will open with a discussion regarding the Sooke Reservoir, a protected watershed that is the region’s primary water supply. He will speak about the water conservation and efficiency programs in place in and around Victoria, and how these relate to priority management issues across Canada, including water pricing, universal metering, and measurement.

2012-05-29 - Lecture/Seminar - Cross-Canada Checkup: A Canadian Perspective on Our Water Future
Description: WEBINAR SUMMARY

Across the country, Canadians are passionate about the protection of water and willing to engage with challenging issues that have the potential to impact water quality and quantity. Although each province and territory faces a unique set of water-related concerns, there are overarching themes that cut across borders.

Drawing on the new report "Cross-Canada Checkup: A Canadian Perspective on Our Water Future," the guest speakers will offer a perspective on current and emerging water challenges and priorities across Canada, and illustrate the interrelatedness of many water issues common to all Canadians. They will explore the Northwest Territories’ groundbreaking new water stewardship strategy as a model for water policy reform in the rest of Canada, and discuss the emerging need for a new national vision for understanding the value of water in this country.

This webinar will complement the launch of "Cross-Canada Checkup: A Canadian Perspective on Our Water Future," published by the POLIS Project on Ecological Governance at the University of Victoria and the Adaptation to Climate Change Team (ACT) at Simon Fraser University.

Egill Helgason

Egill Helgason is one of Iceland's best known TV personalities.  Egil is the presenter of two TV shows, "Silfur Egils", which is a very influential political talk show, and "Kiljan", which is a weekly show on books and literature.  Egil Helgason is also a popular blogger and political analyst who has been interviewed and quoted in media around the world.

Iceland has been praised in foreign media for its quick recovery after the economic collapse of 2008.  Perceptions are different, foreign media and economists like Paul Krugman look to Iceland as an example.  However, in Iceland the current government is very unpopular and trust in politics is at an all time low.  At the same time culture seems to flourish in Iceland.
