Principal investigator process
The Special Programs division of the Office of Research Services administers a variety of external funding programs that include the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), the British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund (BCKDF), Canada Research Chairs (CRC) and Western Economic Diversification Canada (WED).
As these diverse programs all have their own rules and guidelines, it is vitally important that principal investigators contact us for the specific process for their circumstances.
A few important concepts that apply to all funding programs that fall under the Special Programs umbrella are:
Pre-award:
- ensure your lab space is secured (chair/director and dean approval) before submitting an application
- ensure that the research program adheres to all UVic research and regulatory policies
- work closely with Special Programs Officer and Liaison for application development
Post-award:
- work closely with the Special Programs Liaison to finalize the award
- ensure that proper UVic purchasing and hiring procedures are followed
- Any transaction that takes place concerning your project must be vetted and approved through Research Services (i.e., purchase requisitions, journal entries, cheque requisitions, hiring internal and external personnel, etc).
- ensure that the grant award is used only for its specified purpose
- Principal Investigators are to act as the project managers, with Special Programs, to ensure that the condition and guidelines of the funder are met.
- Principal Investigators are responsible for any project over expenditures
