AUCC's pre-budget priorities for 2010-11

On November 30, 2010 AUCC presented Canada’s universities: Valued partners in Canada’s prosperity, to the Honourable James Flaherty, Minister of Finance. This document outlines our pre-budget priorities for 2010-11.  The document can also be found on our web site here at http://www.aucc.ca/_pdf/english/reports/2010/pre_budget_submission_flaherty_11_30_e.pdf.

New Deadlines for Course-Based Research Ethics Applications

In order to ensure that the applications can be reviewed in time for the start of the course, the Human Research Ethics Board wishes to receive the completed Course-Based Ethics Applications at least one month before the start of the term in which the course is scheduled to begin.

This deadline is necessary to ensure that we can provide the UVic community with the required review and approvals for the increasing numbers of human research ethics applications. The deadline applies to all courses where students are provided with the opportunity to conduct research with human participants.

The submission deadlines for 2010-2011 (and for academic years to follow) are:

December 1, 2010 for courses beginning in January 2011

April 1, 2011 for courses beginning in May/June 2011

June 1, 2011 for course beginning in July/August 2011

August 1, 2011 for courses beginning in September 2011

Roles of Acting Associate Vice-Presidents Research

Message from the Vice President Research

Now that Dr. Miller and Dr. Scarth have commenced their new positions as Acting Associate Vice-Presidents Research, I would like to give you more information about their respective roles and responsibilities. Please pass this information on to relevant staff and faculty.

Acting Associate Vice-President Research – Dr. D. Michael Miller
Dr. Miller has taken on responsibility for the important portfolio of research computing and will be involved in other committees and initiatives across campus. He will chair the Research Computing Task Force and will attend the Information Systems Steering Council and assist the Director of Research Services with the development of research administration information systems. Michael will also represent UVic on the boards of BCNet, Compute Canada and PIMS.

Acting Associate Vice-President Research (Operations and Planning) – Dr. Rachael Scarth
Dr. Scarth is taking the lead on research operational planning and management issues. With the Vice-President Research she will be looking at ways in which UVic can better plan, manage and administer its significant research projects and infrastructure. Rachael will be leading research operations and will participate in internal university committees related to risk management, facilities development and integrated planning. Rachael will continue to be responsible for the Office of Research Services.

Joint responsibilities
Rachael and Michael will work jointly with the Vice-President Research, Associate Deans Research and Centre Directors on broader matters of significance to the research mission of UVic, including strategic planning and policy development for research, communications, and oversight of internal processes and regulations.

Ms. Marleen Willems (avprsec@uvic.ca, ext 7971) will provide administrative support to both Michael and Rachael in their capacity as Acting Associate Vice-Presidents Research.
