The 2011 Strategic Project Grants (SPG) Program is currently open for applications. The goal of the SPG program is to increase research and training in targeted areas that will strongly enhance Canada's economy, society and/or environment within the next 10 years. The program is intended to increase the participation of Canadian companies and government organizations in academic research and enable the transfer of knowledge, technology and expertise to those organizations that are well-positioned to apply the results.

Every five years, NSERC renews the target areas for its strategic partnerships programs to ensure they reflect the current priorities of all stakeholders. The four new target areas are now in place and will be effective for the 2011–15 competitions, resulting in an anticipated investment in excess of $200 million.

Highlights for the 2011 Strategic Project Grants Competition include:

• New target areas and research topics (Areas and topics accepted in the past may no longer be eligible. Check the new descriptions prior to preparing your application)
• Major equipment requests are now limited to $150,000.
• Where a government organization is a supporting organization, the letter of support accompanying Form 183A must be signed by a director general (or equivalent level).
• Co-applicants from outside the natural sciences and engineering may be incorporated into the proposals.
• Applicants are encouraged to incorporate international collaborations into their proposals. Information concerning calls for collaborative proposals under international agreements will be updated in January 2011.

NSERC must receive the application by April 15, 2011.

Ottawa, November 30, 2010  - News Release
The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, today announced the reappointment of Dr. Suzanne Fortier as President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

NSERC is a federal agency that helps make Canada a country of discoverers and innovators for all Canadians. The agency supports some 30,000 university and college students and post-doctoral fellows in their advanced studies. NSERC promotes discovery by funding nearly 12,000 post-secondary professors every year and fosters innovation by encouraging more than 1,500 Canadian companies to participate and invest in post-secondary research projects.

“Dr. Fortier has led the organization by supporting discovery research, fostering innovation and further developing business–academic relationships. She has sharpened NSERC’s focus on excellence,” said Minister Clement. “Her extensive knowledge, expertise and commitment to NSERC have strengthened Canada’s record on innovation.”

Dr. Fortier has served as President of NSERC since January 2006. Prior to her appointment as President, she was a frequent contributor to many NSERC committees as either a member or chair. Notably, she served as a member of NSERC’s Council from 1996 to 2005, including a term as Vice-President of Council from 1997 to 2002.

Dr. Fortier’s honours include the Clara Benson Award for distinguished contributions to chemistry by a woman (1997), the Entrepreneurship Award from Communications and Information Technology Ontario (1997) and the Queen’s University Distinguished Service Award (2005).

Dr. Fortier holds a Bachelor of Science (1972) and a Ph.D. in Crystallography (1976), both from McGill University. She has also received an Honorary Doctor of Letters (2006) from Thompson Rivers University in British Columbia.
