Criteria for Election

By-law 3.1 states the object of the Society in the following terms: The object of the Society shall be to promote learning and intellectual accomplishments of exceptional quality. The Society recognizes remarkable contributions in the arts, humanities and sciences, as well as in Canadian public life.

By-law 4.1.2 sets out the criteria for election to the fellowship: Fellows shall be persons whose intellectual achievements have been exceptional through a body of publications, intellectual endeavours or creative activities exhibiting original contributions in the arts, humanities or sciences as well as in public life. At the time of their election they shall be Canadian citizens or have been Canadian residents for the past three years. Election to the Society is the highest honour that can be attained by scholars, artists and scientists in Canada.
