Hybrid Electric Marine Vehicles

Development of Model Based Design and Optimization Tool for Hybrid Electric Marine Vessels

The new research apply model/optimization-based design for advanced hybrid electric vehicles to address the deficiencies of the traditional marine design tools. The Clean Transportation Initiative from Transport Canada is supporting this research. BC Ferries is providing the UVic research team (Zuomin Dong, Peter Oshkai, Kevin Andersen, Mostafa Rahimpour, Ted Alley) access to the new hybrid electric ferry (M.V. Tachek) operated between Quadra Island and Cortes Island, to collect field data for the validation of vessel- and route-specific hybrid powertrain system models. These models will be used to form new design tools for the hybrid electric propulsion system of marine vessels, including ferries and tugboats.
