Student Essay contest

In cooperation with the Victoria Branch of the Canadian International Council, the Centre for Global Studies is sponsoring an essay competition with three cash prizes for senior undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Victoria and Royal Roads University.

Students from any faculty may enter the competition. Students will select a field of policy to answer the following question:

Is Canada "back"? How can Canada play a meaningful role on the world stage?

Application Requirements:

  • The essay must not be longer than 3500 words in length, typed and double-spaced
  • Essays should include a cover page with the title, the key research question, a summary of the findings (max 150 words) and its (practical or policy) implications (max 150 words).
  • Essays should display original thought and sound research principles.
  • They will follow established academic practice with regard to citations, plagiarism and will provide necessary references.
Value: A monetary prize of
  • $1000 will be offered to the winning essay,
  • $500 prize to the second place essay (runner up) and;
  • $250 for the third place essay (second runner up).

Details:

The essays will be adjudicated by a committee composing of representatives from the CIC Victoria Branch and the Centre for Global Studies, University of Victoria. Evaluation will be made based on originality, presentation of argument, policy relevance and overall scholarly excellence. The winning paper will be offered the opportunity to be published on the Canadian International Council’s award winning website, OpenCanada.org, and the winning authors will be invited to present their papers to the Victoria Branch of the CIC and to the Centre for Global Studies as part of their “Global Talk” series.

cfgsra@uvic.ca and addressed to Dr. Martin Bunton, Interim Director, Centre for Global Studies with “CIC-CFGS Essay Contest“ in the subject line.
Winning entries will be notified within 30 days of the close of the contest.  All entries will become the property of the Canadian International Council, Victoria Branch and the Centre for Global Studies.
