Achievement Awards recognize undergraduate students who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to the pursuit of excellence in their endeavours. Fine arts, athletics, and other areas where individual expression becomes public are recognized through these awards. Recipients must have demonstrated financial need and a minimum 3.5 sessional grade point average for students continuing at or transferring to UVic, or a 70% admission average for students commencing postsecondary studies for the first time. Departments will distribute application forms to prospective students, who will complete and return them to the Office of the Dean of Fine Arts.

A number of bursaries are awarded to graduate or undergraduate students in the School of Music. Where practical two-thirds of the bursaries are to be awarded to students whose principal instrument is piano, and one-third of the bursaries are to be awarded to students whose principal instrument is violin, viola, or cello. Preference will be given first to graduate or undergraduate students entering the School of Music, and second to students proceeding to their second or third year of studies in the School of Music.

Victor and Mary Hess Bursary*

A bursary is awarded to a continuing student in the Bachelor of Music program who is specializing in any instrument.

Students must apply to be considered for the entrance scholarships below, which are based on marks and other criteria such as academic achievement and volunteer and community work. All UVic entrance scholarships require a minimum 85% admission average, unless otherwise specified in the terms of reference of the scholarship. Recipients will be selected upon the recommendation of the School of Music.

Daisie Thirlwall Scholarship in Violin*

Scholarships in varying amounts are awarded annually to gifted violinists who demonstrate excellence or potential in performance and who are registered in the Bachelor of Music program. Preference will be given to newly admitted students. In the event there are no qualified violinists in any given year, other string instrumentalists will be considered. In the case of equally qualified candidates, need shall be the determining factor.

Phillip T. Young Memorial Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to entering or continuing students of woodwind instruments in the BMus. program in the School of Music.  Preference will be given to students of double reed instruments.

Rebecca and Esther Lazarus Scholarship in Music*

Two scholarships are made available by Miss Rivkah Isaacs for outstanding performers entering the third or fourth year of the University music program. One is to be given to a singer in memory of Rebecca Lazarus Isaacs, and the other is to be given to a pianist in memory of Esther Lazarus Levy.

In the case of two equally gifted candidates for either or both of the above, need is to be the determining factor. Selection of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendations of the faculty members of the School of Music.

School of Music Faculty String Award*

Awards made on the recommendation of the School of Music faculty, subject to approval by the Senate Committee on Awards, given annually or as funds permit to outstanding violinists, violists, cellists, or double bassists, in recognition of performance ability. In cases of equal performance skill, need should be the determining factor.

The awards are named in recognition of School of Music faculty who made personal contributions to inaugurate this fund, but it is further supplemented through proceeds from scholarship concerts and other sources. The number and size of such awards will be determined annually by the School faculty.

School of Music Women's Choral Scholarship

A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate or graduate woman student enrolled in the University Women’s Choir, the UVic Chamber Singers or the UVic Chorus who is pursuing a major in music. Preference will be given to music education students. Selection of the recipients will be made by Student Awards and Financial Aid or the Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the School of Music.

Sophia M. terHart Vittali Scholarship*

Taylor Scholarship in Music*

A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student in any year of study for the Bachelor of Music degree. The scholarship is presented in honour of Dr. M.G. Taylor, the first President of the University of Victoria, and Mrs. Taylor, and is administered by the University of Victoria Foundation. If funds permit, additional scholarships may be made.

Victoria Chamber Orchestra Scholarship

One or more scholarships are awarded to students entering or continuing in an undergraduate or graduate program in the School of Music whose principal instrument is violin, viola, cello, or double bass.

A scholarship of not less than $1,000 is awarded to an outstanding performer in his or her third (or second-to-last) year in the School of Music intending to pursue a career in music.  The student must have been a resident of the Greater Victoria area for at least two years and not have been a previous recipient of this award.

Ida Halpern Music Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a student entering third or fourth year of study towards the Bachelor of Music degree. Preference will be given to a student with an interest in first nations music of the West Coast.
