EDSA Award

An award of $200 is given to a continuing student in the Faculty of Education who has demonstrated dedication to the Education Students’ Association.

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Margaret E. Ableson Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to students entering or continuing in either the Bachelor of Nursing program, or the Bachelor of Education program with a teaching concentration in Science and Environmental Education. Normally, the bursary is awarded alternately between the two programs beginning with the Bachelor of Nursing program.

One or more bursaries are awarded to students in the Faculty of Education who are enrolled in teacher education. If two students have equal qualifications and need, then preference will be given to students who participate in 4H or other youth organizations pertaining to agriculture.

Fox Memorial Bursary*

An award will be made to a deserving student entering year 3, 4 or 5 in the Elementary Curriculum of the Faculty of Education, who has at least a good second-class average. If funds permit, a second award will be given.

Shelly Hamilton Memorial Graduate Bursary*

An award is given to a female student doing her M.A./M.Ed., or Ph.D. in the Counseling Program, Psychological Foundations, Faculty of Education. Preference will be given to a single mother carrying out dissertation research or working on a thesis or project. Selection will be made by Student Financial Aid Services upon the recommendation of the Department of Psychological Foundations.

Taylor Education Bursary

Annual awards will be made to fourth year students showing outstanding ability and interest in Education and needing financial assistance. If no qualifying students are enrolled in fourth year, the bursaries may be awarded the next year or be presented to qualified students of the fifth year, at the discretion of the Faculty of Education. The award commemorates the interest in Education by the Taylor family of Victoria.

Unless otherwise indicated in the Terms of Awards, recipients are selected by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendations of the Faculty of Education.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals and prizes.

50th Aniversary Education Entrance Scholarship

A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded annually to an academically outstanding student entering the University of Victoria from a Canadian secondary school, college, or university who is pursuing an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Education.

A. Hugh Salmond Memorial Scholarship in Secondary Science Education*

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding student in the Faculty of Education who is entering his/her professional year of a program in secondary education with a view to teaching science. The student must have volunteer experience while at the University of Victoria.

Applications must be accompanied by two letters in support of their volunteer work.

Distinguished Education Alumni Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student in an area of study in the Faculty of Education. ­The area of study is chosen by the Distinguished Education Alumni Award recipient. Application forms are available from the Faculty of Education office. Three letters of reference are required from Faculty members, members of the community, or peers describing the applicant's university or community service contributions and leadership capabilities.

Completed applications and reference letters must be submitted to the Faculty Office by May 15.

Dryden Scholarship For Students with a Disability

A $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a student with a physical disability or a learning disability in an undergraduate program in the Faculty of Education on the basis of academic performance. Preference will be given to a student with demonstrated financial need.

Hugh Farquhar Memorial Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in a B.Ed. program. Selection will be based on the following criteria: 1. Outstanding academic achievement; 2. Demonstrated contributions to a range of university and community activities. Final selection will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

The selection process at the Faculty level will include an interview of selected candidates.

Hugh and Lilian Salmond Scholarship in Elementary Education*

A scholarship is awarded annually to a student entering Year 5 of a program in elementary education. The student must have demonstrated excellent teaching performance and the ability to use creative approaches to teaching as documented in practica reports and have achieved first class standing in course work in the first of the professional years.

Hugh and Lilian Salmond Scholarship in Secondary Education*

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding student in the Faculty of Education who is entering his/her professional year of a program in secondary education. The student must have volunteer experience while at the University of Victoria.

Applications must be accompanied by two letters in support of their volunteer work.

Norma Mickelson Legacy Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students in the Faculty of Education who have achieved academic excellence, and who are actively involved in the community and have a record of outstanding contributions to the community through their work as volunteers. Applications must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from a community/ volunteer group providing evidence of the exceptional contributions the applicant has made, and a second letter of recommendation from a Faculty of Education faculty member.

Application forms for this scholarship are available from the Dean’s Office in the Faculty of Education and must be submitted by May 15.

  • In the case of an undergraduate student, selection will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.
  • In the case of a graduate student, selection of the recipient will be made by the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Richard L. Williams Memorial Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to post degree (Secondary) students who have a declared teaching area in Chemistry or Physics. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated involvement and/or leadership in the community and have an outstanding grade point average in their chemistry or physics courses.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

Ada and Robert Le Grys Memorial Scholarship in Elementary Education*

A scholarship is awarded to a student entering their final year of a program in elementary education. The student must have demonstrated excellent teaching performance and the ability to use innovative approaches to teaching as documented in practica reports and have achieved first class standing in coursework.

A. Hugh Salmond Memorial Scholarship in Elementary Science Education*

A scholarship is awarded to a student entering his/her last year of a program in elementary education with a view to excellence in science education and or science education leadership. The student must have:

  • demonstrated excellent teaching performance and the ability to use creative approaches to teaching as documented in practica reports, school visits, and planning.

  • achieved first class standing in coursework in the first of the professional years.

A. Wilfrid Johns Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a promising student who has demonstrated the ability to teach art.

Cameron Memorial Trust Scholarship

One or more scholarships are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students who are continuing their studies in the Faculty of Education. In the case of an undergraduate student, selection of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Chapter A.J. Peo Sisterhood Scholarship

A scholarship of $1000 is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate female student in a teacher education program in the Faculty of Education who has an interest in special needs children.

City of Gardens Chapter, Sweet Adelines International Scholarship

A scholarship is awarded to a female student in the Bachelor of Education degree program, who has demonstrated a talent and achievement in vocal music.

David F. Mahoney Memorial Award*

One or more scholarships are awarded to undergraduate male students pursuing studies in elementary or middle years education in the Faculty of Education.  Students must demonstrate a commitment to or an involvement in innovation and child centered learning in public education. Preference will be given to students who have completed an undergraduate degree prior to being admitted to the education program.

Denton Memorial Book Prize*

A book prize is awarded to a student entering their final year elementary who has demonstrated excellence in student teaching and good general proficiency.

Derrick and Lytta Pereira Education

A scholarship is awarded to a student entering or continuing in the Faculty of Education. Preference is given to a student from the City of Nanaimo.

Don Wright Scholarship in Music Education*

One or more scholarships are awarded to students in the Bachelor of Music of Education (Music Education) degree program who demonstrate high academic standards, leadership and a strong commitment to achieving excellence in teaching music.

Don Wright Scholarship in Music Education( instrumental music) *

This scholarship was established by Mr. Don Wright with the aim of strengthening the teaching of vocal and choral music in the schools. The scholarship is awarded annually to a full time student in the Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Education (Music Education) degree program who has demonstrated a special aptitude for vocal and choral music and a teaching ability at either the elementary or secondary level.

Selection of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Dr. B. Barbara Adams Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a fifth year student in the Faculty of Education who shows an interest and aptitude for the teaching of gifted children. If there is no eligible student, the scholarship will be awarded to a student who shows an interest and aptitude in teaching “exceptional” children.

Faculty of Education Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship up to the amount of the recipient's tuition fees will be awarded annually to an outstanding student in the Faculty of Education on the basis of previous academic performance and potential as a teacher. In cases where equal scholastic ability has been demonstrated, financial need will be considered. Selection will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Harry O. and Etta B. English Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is awrded for general proficiency, and superior performance in practice teaching as determined by practica reports to a student who is returning for further study in the Faculty of Education. Selection of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Howard and Linda Petch Scholarship

A scholarship is awarded to a Bachelor of Education student with skills in art, drama or music education entering 5th year and who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and the potential to become an exemplary teacher in elementary or secondary school.

Hugh and Lilian Salmond Scholarship in Elementary Education*

A scholarship is awarded to a student entering their final year of a program in elementary education. The student must have demonstrated excellent teaching performance and the ability to use innovative approaches to teaching as documented in practica reports and have achieved first class standing in coursework.

Hugh Campbell and Marion Alice Small Art Education Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates academic excellence and the ability to teach art effectively at the secondary school level during classes or seminars where teaching performance is assessed.

Jean Dey Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding students who have completed their final year in an elementary program in the Faculty of Education.

John and Alice McCulloch Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a student in the Faculty of Education who has demonstrated an interest and aptitude in art education with merit and will be continuing study at the University of Victoria.

Kapur S. Sundhu Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a student with the highest grade point average in the third year and entering the fourth year in the Faculty of Education. Selection of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Le Grys Memorial Scholarship in Education*

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student entering the final year in the Faculty of Education. Students must have demonstrated excellent teaching performance and the ability to use creative approaches to teaching as documented in practica reports.

Linda Vey Prize*

A prize is made to an education student proceeding to the Learning Support Strand.

Margaret Sanson Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student entering year four of the Bachelor of Education Elementary degree program declaring an interest and aptitude in the teaching of primary grades.

M. Beverley Vaio Law Scholarship in Education*

A scholarship is awarded to a student in the Faculty of Education who has excelled in academic and professional courses. The scholarship will normally be made to a student entering fifth year who has a high academic grade point average as well as a high level of performance in teaching practica as documented in practica reports.

Selection of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Noel and Margaret Gantly Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate or graduate student studying elementary or secondary music education in the Faculty of Education.
  • Selection of the undergraduate recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Music Education section of the Faculty of Education.
  • Selection of the graduate recipient will be made by the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Music Education section of the Faculty of Education.

Peter Beugger Memorial Scholarship in Elementary Science Education*

One or more scholarships are awarded to female students who have demonstrated a commitment to educating children about science in formal and informal settings, and who are in the elementary teacher education program, declaring an interest and aptitude in science education.

Robert Burns McMicking Chapter Iode Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a student in the Faculty of Education with an interest and aptitude in elementary education who has shown promise in student teaching.

Rosalind W. Young Scholarship*

To be awarded annually by the Canadian Federation of University Women Victoria to the woman achieving the highest standing in third year Education who is continuing University studies.

Ruth Rose Memorial Award*

A book prize is awarded to a 4th year elementary education student with high standing.

Thomas M. Hess Scholarship in Indigenous Language Revitalization*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate Indigenous students in either the Faculty of Humanities or the Faculty of Education and who are enrolled in Indigenous Language courses or an Indigenous language program.

Selection of the recipient will be made by a committee formed by the Department of Linguistics and will include members from both faculties.

Vera Flett Keddy Buchanan Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to a mature undergraduate or graduate student continuing in the Faculty of Education who is not receiving another award.

  • In the case of an undergraduate student, selection will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.
  • In the case of a graduate student, selection of the recipient will be made by the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

William A. and Frances E. Harper Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a deserving and promising student in the Faculty of Education.

William B. and Joyce M. Le Grys Memorial Scholaship in Elementary Education*

A scholarship is awarded to a student entering their final year of a program in elementary education. The student must have demonstrated excellent teaching performance and the ability to use innovative approaches to teaching as documented in practica reports and have achieved first class standing in coursework.
