If you're a graduate student new to UVic or new to graduate studies, be sure to participate in our Graduate Student Orientation program. Attend sessions on research methods, scholarship applications and career opportunities while connecting with staff, faculty and students.

  • Discuss topics critical to graduate-student success
  • Network with new and current graduate students
  • Learn about key campus locations and resources

Program

Graduate Student Orientation runs from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Start time Activity
9:00 a.m. Check-in or register at the University Centre. Late check-in and registration will continue after 10:00 a.m. at the info tent beside Petch Fountain in the Quad. 
9:20 a.m. Welcome ceremony and presentation in Farquhar Auditorium
10:30 a.m. Conference style workshops
12:00 p.m. Barbeque lunch and information fair
1:15 p.m. Conference style workshops
2:45 p.m. Graduate-specific campus tours (optional)
4:00 p.m. Afternoon social

Additional programs for graduate students

Graduate Student Fall TA Conference

Graduate students wishing to pursue positions as teaching assistants are encouraged to attend the Learning and Teaching Centre's annual TA Conference from September 5-8, 2017.

Workshop topics for the conference include:

  • Introduction to teaching at UVic
  • Time management
  • What you need to know about that first day of class
  • How to build your confidence
  • Who students are today
  • How to grade and design rubrics
  • How to promote collaborative learning
  • What to do for a guest lecture

Graduate Students' Society Welcome Weekend

The Graduate Students’ Society (GSS) will be running a Welcome Weekend program open to all new graduate students. The weekend will feature social activities to help you discover UVic’s GSS, explore Victoria, and meet other students!

The weekend will include the following events:

  • Friday, September 8: Ice breakers and group social
  • Saturday, September 9: Hike up Mount Douglas and pub crawl
  • Sunday, September 10: Visit Vinning St. Market and beach day
