If you're a graduate student new to UVic or new to graduate studies, be sure to participate in our Graduate Student Orientation program. Attend sessions on research methods, scholarship applications and career opportunities while connecting with staff, faculty and students.

  • Discuss topics critical to graduate-student success
  • Network with new and current graduate students
  • Learn about key campus locations and resources


Graduate Student Orientation runs from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

9:00 a.m. Check-in at the University Centre
9:20 a.m. Welcome ceremony and presentation in Farquhar Auditorium
10:30 a.m. Conference style workshops
12:00 p.m. Barbeque lunch and information fair
1:15 p.m. Conference style workshops
2:45 p.m. Graduate-specific campus tours (optional)
4:00 p.m. Afternoon social


The following is a tentative list of the available workshops as part of Graduate Student Orientation. You can select up to four workshops when you register.

  • Academic integrity and expectations: What you need to know
  • Applications for tri-council scholarships (SSHRC, CIHR, NSERC)
  • Conduct your research (with humans or animals) ethically!
  • Co-op and Career: Career strategies for graduate students
  • Five ways to hack your graduate education
  • Getting to know the library at UVic as a researcher
  • Graduate student teaching at UVic
  • Meet and greet for Indigenous students
  • Services and support for Indigenous students
  • Student-supervisor relationship
