Former DMSC honours students accepted to Michigan State University's medical program

Karthik Gopalakrishnan, a former biochemistry honours student with the Division of Medical Sciences (DMSC) at the University of Victoria, has been accepted into the medical program at Michigan State University.

Gopalakrishnan completed both a directed studies project and an honours degree under Dr. Brian Christie, Profesor and Neuroscience Graduate Program Director with the DMSC.

"Karthik showed a passion for his work, and questioned everything. In his initial project, he not only learned how to do tissue staining, but researched histology websites to learn more about the stains we were using. He actually came back with some suggestions for improving the staining process that we adopted."

In his biochemistry honours project, Gopalakrishnan examined how mild traumatic brain injury can impact mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling. His work helped to show that even mild forms of mTBI can produce significant changes in a molecular pathway associated with learning and memory performance.
