Graduate study carrels

In addition to the open study spaces available throughout the McPherson Library, there are carrels available to UVic graduate students.

Graduate study carrels

Graduate study carrels are assigned annually, from September 1st to August 15th of the following year, by staff at the main loan desk, McPherson Library.  Carrel renewals are accepted May 1st through August 15th. Carrels are limited in number so applicants may be placed on a waitlist.

A deposit of $10 is required for the key and is refundable upon its return. Lost keys are subject to a $10 replacement fee.

Carrels are assigned on a first-come first-served basis to UVic graduate students who do not have office space, according to the following priorities:

1. graduate students who are in their thesis/dissertation year*

2. graduate students who are not working on their theses or dissertations.

*graduate students working on theses or dissertations while temporarily withdrawn from UVic are considered currently registered for the purpose of carrel assignments.

There are 47 graduate study carrels located on the lower level within an open study area.

  • 44 carrels have lockable drawers, power outlets, and data ports
  • 3 carrels are designed for wheelchair access and are reserved for graduate students with a disability. These carrels also have lockable drawers, power outlets, and data ports.

There are 47 graduate study carrels located on the 3rd floor within an open study area.

  • 21 carrels have lockable drawers, power outlets, and data ports.
  • 25 carrels have lockable drawers, power outlets, data ports, and task lighting.
  • 1 carrel is height-adjustable for wheelchair access and is reserved for a graduate student with a disability. The carrel includes a lockable drawer, power outlet, data port, and task lighting.

Wireless access is available on both the lower level and on the 3rd floor.

All carrels may be used by other students when the assignee is absent.
