Course reserves

To find all Law Library reserve materials, log in to course reserves (Ares).

If a course you're currently registered in does not appear in the list, there are no reserve materials currently available for that course.

  • The Law Library is responsible for reserve materials assigned for law courses

For faculty: guidelines for placing materials on reserve

Instructors may submit electronic or hard copy items to the appropriate Libraries’ Reserve Service for processing via web form, email, or in person.

All requests submitted for reserve must comply with the UVic's Fair Dealing Policy.  To ensure compliance, please provide full citation information for each item as it is required for all articles, books, book chapters, web pages, PDFs and links.

Submitted course materials requiring copyright permissions will be forwarded to the UVic Copyright Office for clearance. Permissions may take 6-8 weeks to obtain and related costs or fees will be charged to the department or faculty requesting copyright clearance.  For further information contact the Copyright Office.

Processing times and end of term procedures

Processing times

To ensure that your course reserve materials are processed quickly, please submit your reserve requests as soon as possible and provide full citation information for each item.

Course lists received at the beginning of term may take two weeks to process from the time received.

End of term procedures

If your course is being offered the following term and you'd like to use the same reserve items, please ask reserve staff to roll-over your materials to the next semester.

If your course is not offered in the following term, we'll send your personal copies of books and photocopies to your departmental office. Library books will be returned to the shelves.

Reserve alternatives and CourseSpaces

In addition to placing material on reserve, you may consider the following:

CourseSpaces

Once your course materials have been processed by reserve, add the Ares link to your CourseSpaces site for students to quickly access readings for your course.

Electronic journals

The library has online access to full text journal articles. Electronic journal indexes and full text journal articles can be accessed from our UVic Libraries home page. Links to articles can also be added to your course reserve list for easy access through Ares.
