Pacific Opera Victoria Poster Collection
Pacific Opera Victoria (POV) was originally incorporated on September 3, 1975, as the Vancouver Island Opera Society. The company presented several productions from 1976 to 1979. In September 1979, it staged The Merry Wives of Windsor, its first production as the Pacific Opera Association. In 1987 the company's name was amended again, to the Pacific Opera Victoria Association.
Under the leadership of founding Artistic Director Timothy Vernon, POV has showcased an amazing variety of productions - Baroque masterpieces, Canadian premières, popular works at the core of the repertoire, lesser known works, and new operas, such as Mary's Wedding, a POV commission that had its world première in November 2011.
POV's mission is to create a dynamic operatic experience, and to inspire audiences, artists, and community. The company achieves this by presenting diverse repertoire in innovative original productions; by providing opportunities to Canadian artists at all stages of their careers, from student to mentor; by engaging audiences and community in the communicative power of opera; and by encouraging the use of opera as a resource for educators to enrich the learning of young people.
In 2013, POV staged its 100th production, Verdi's Falstaff. Falstaff was welcomed as part of the On Stage / Off Stage celebration of Shakespeare. To celebrate the milestone of the 100th production, this collection of POV's historic posters was gathered and digitized by UVic Archives. These posters form a part of Pacific Opera Victoria's archival fonds (AR485), now housed at UVic Archives & Special Collections; they advertise productions extending back to POV's earliest days as the Vancouver Island Opera Society. The posters show as much variety as the productions they advertise, drawing on local illustrators, photographers and typographers to convey the flavour of each opera.
