In the wake of a privacy breach in January 2012, the university offered free credit monitoring for one year to affected individuals. This service expires one year from the date of enrolment.
We continue to recommend that the best practices identified in the updated Identity Theft Protection Checklist be followed to protect your personal information.
The University of Victoria has reviewed the investigation report into the January 2012 privacy breach at the university which was released March 29, 2012 by the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of BC (OIPC) and accepts its findings and recommendations, says UVic President David Turpin.
“We appreciate the Commissioner’s thorough and thoughtful report and recognize that it identifies areas in which the university can improve the protection of personal information,” says Turpin. “We will be implementing the commissioner’s recommendations and, in fact, in a number of areas we are already taking significant steps.”

Reminder to Sign up for Credit Monitoring Services
I am writing to remind those employees/former employees affected by the break-in and theft of personal information from the Administrative Services Building that the deadline to enroll in the credit monitoring services being provided by the university is April 15th, 2012. After April 15th the TransUnion codes provided in my February 3, 2012 communication will not be valid and Equifax codes will no longer be available.
UVic has consolidated its recommendations on the steps employees and former employees affected by the break-in and theft of personal information from the Administrative Services Building Jan 7-8 can take to protect themselves against fraud and identity theft. This information is now available as a checklist.
Instructions will be distributed and access codes for credit monitoring will be available Monday, February 6.
All UVic employees and any former UVic employees affected by the theft of personal information from the Administrative Services Building on the weekend of Jan. 7-8 and for whom the university has a valid email address will receive information via a personal and confidential email. Those for whom UVic does not have a current email address will receive the information through a personal and confidential letter.
The credit monitoring service will be provided for 12 months at no charge to UVic employees and affected former employees.

The university has been actively working all week to secure credit monitoring services.
Given the complexities involved and the large number of employees/former employees affected, it is unfortunately taking longer than anticipated to finalize arrangements.
We are continuing to work to see that the service is in place as soon as possible with suitable coverage, ease of access, and protection for our community.

The following is an important update on services that the university is offering all those affected by last weekend’s theft of personal information.
This afternoon Saanich Police held a news conference at which they reported that their investigators are pursuing a possible link between an instance of online fraud experienced by a former UVic employee and last weekend’s theft. The spokesperson underscored the need for current or former UVic staff affected by last weekend’s theft of personal information from the university to take the recommended steps to protect their personal information as soon as possible.
I am writing to apologize to you for last weekend's theft of personal information from the university and all the concern, inconvenience and frustration it is causing. I want to assure you that UVic fully recognizes the seriousness of this privacy breach and that we are taking all possible steps to help our current and former employees protect their information and to enhance the security of personal information in the future.
