Diplomas

Overview

Our diploma programs are designed for active professionals working in all levels of government. Students bring a wealth of experience to courses while building new skills and competencies. We offer two diplomas, each with a unique focus and exciting career possibilities.

Study where you live

Think you can’t afford the time or funds to earn a diploma? Our diploma programs are offered online. You can earn a diploma from home while meeting your work and personal responsibilities. Your developing skills and expertise can be put to practice immediately, in your own work environment.

Public Sector Management

The Diploma in Public Sector Management (DPSM) is an 11-course program.

It is designed for administrators and managers wanting to become effective and responsible managers in the public and non-profit sectors. If you are employed in federal, provincial, or local government, a crown corporation, or other non-profit organizations, this is the program for you.

Course topics include: organizational design and development; human resource administration; labour relations; policy development and implementation; legislative and government structure; communication; economics; research; ethics; financial management; and information management.

After completing the DPSM Program you, as an employee in the public or non-profit sector, will:

  • understand the role, growth, and importance of governments in Canada
  • gain the necessary background knowledge of managerial theory
  • apply management theory in typical work situations in order to deliver effective and efficient government services
  • gain the skills and tools to analyze and communicate complex public sector management issues
  • create, recommend and implement solutions to management problems

Local Government Management

The Diploma in Local Government Management (DLGM) is an 11-course program.

If you are an administrator or manager in local government, whether regional or municipal, this program is for you.

By completing the DLGM Program you, as an employee in the local government sector, will:

  • understand the role, growth, and importance of local government in Canada
  • gain the necessary background knowledge of managerial theory
  • learn and practice the skills required to apply management theory in typical work situations in order to deliver effective and efficient local government services
  • gain the skills and tools to analyze and communicate complex local government issues
  • create, recommend and implement solutions to local government management problems

Accreditation and Financial Support

In addition to receiving University credit for local government courses, these courses may also count towards external professional accreditation by the Board of Examiners of the BC Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. You will also note at this website that the Board of Examiners provides financial support to learners who are employed in local government and working towards professional accreditation.
