Graduate Certificates

How to apply

All application documents must be sent to:

Graduate Admissions and Records
University of Victoria
PO Box 3025 STN CSC
Victoria, BC V8W 3P2

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants must have:

  • an undergraduate degree (or equivalent from another country) from an accredited and recognized institution. For the Graduate Professional Certificate in Library Sector Leadership, a master's degree is preferred.
  • a grade point average of 5.0 (B) in the last two years (30 units) leading to the undergraduate degree.
  • Evaluations program applicants only: equivalents of three specified courses (please see the Evaluation programs brochure for details).

Application deadlines

We are not accepting applications to the Library Sector Leadership and Cultural Sector Leadership programs at this time, the anticipated next intakes will be for Spring 2013. Please contact the Graduate Certificate Administrative Assistant if you require further information (gradcert@uvic.ca).

The Application deadline for the Fall 2012 intake has been extended. The deadline for applications is March 30, 2012. Please contact the Graduate Certificate Administrative Assistant if you require further information (gradcert@uvic.ca).

Submitting an application

Apply for admission to the program through the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Once your complete file is received and assessed by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, it is forwarded to us for consideration.

To submit an application:

  • Fill out an application form online (recommended); if you are not able to complete the application form online, please contact the Graduate Admissions and Records office as per the instructions available through the following link: http://www.uvic.ca/students/grad/admissions/ready/.
For the Evaluation program, scroll through the Planned Program of Study field to select "Prof Spec Certificate: Evaluation" or "Diploma Evaluation".
  • In accordance with the submission information provided on the page: http://www.uvic.ca/graduatestudies/admissions/admissions/beforeapplying/documents/index.php, assemble the following documents and submit them as one package:
    • Provide two Assessment Reports from academic referees. If it has been more than five years since you last attended a post-secondary institution, we recommend that you include three Assessment Reports from current or former employers in place of academic referees. To strengthen your application, we recommend that your referees attach a letter of reference in addition to the Assessment Report.
Because Assessment Reports and letters of reference are confidential, you must request that your assessor provides the report/letter to you in a sealed envelope with his/her signature across the seal.
    • Submit official academic transcripts from all post secondary institutions attended. Official transcripts are those which are received directly from the post secondary institution OR are received in the institution's sealed, stamped envelope.
    • Submit a professional résumé.
    • Submit a Letter of Intent describing why you are seeking a graduate certificate and how the credential relates to your career plans, personal values and goals.
    • Submit other evidence of suitability for admission that you feel is relevant (e.g., academic records from non-degree courses).

*All documents should be enclosed in one complete package and sent to the Graduate Admissions and Records Office either by mail or in digital form. Please choose only one of the two methods for submitting all documentation -- not both (as this will delay your application significantly).
