About us

Compelling Futures Begin Here

Established in 1974, the School of Public Administration is known for innovative academic programs, the many contributions of faculty to research, and our commitment to providing quality professional development opportunities for professionals in the public and non-profit sectors.

Mission statement

The School aspires to be a leading Canadian community of students, practitioners, alumni, faculty, and staff developing knowledge through teaching, research, and professional development emphasizing innovative management of public policy and services.

We are guided by our mission statement which captures the school's distinctive features. These features are

  • We focus on both policy analysis and public management – through teaching and research we are one of the few schools that continue to emphasize public administration as opposed to policy analysis.
  • We are strongly committed to research, but we also believe that our students and alumni are on the cutting edge of knowledge, and it is important to learn and share knowledge with them and learn from them.
  • We emphasize scholarly research and applied activities such as research contracts and professional development involving practitioners and students.
  • We are a genuinely inter-disciplinary professional school, sporting faculty with backgrounds in economics, political science, ethics, psychology, management, business, law, and public policy.
  • We have been committed to providing a collegial and positive environment for faculty, staff, students, and alumni to develop skills and share knowledge.
  • We are one of several leading schools at the national level, but we believe that we have a distinctive Western Canadian perspective and have earned a good reputation for innovation and productivity.
