Dr. Leslie Brown

Dr. Leslie Brown

Dr. Leslie Brown and her team are finalists for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Insight Award in recognition of her outstanding work on understanding fathering within child welfare.

The award is given to an individual or team whose project resulted in a significant contribution to knowledge and understanding about people, societies and the world. The Insight Award is part of an important new offering of awards launched by SSHRC to recognize outstanding social sciences and humanities research. The awards will be presented at a special ceremony at the World Social Sciences Forum in Montreal, Quebec on October 15th, 2013.

Dr. Brown is a professor of Social Work in the Faculty of Human and Social Development and has been working in Indigenous communities for over 35 years. Her research carried out in collaboration with Thompson Rivers University and Durham University in the United Kingdom has garnered attention from family court judges, probation workers, Indigenous family serving agencies, social work schools and professional organizations in Canada, UK, USA, Australia, South America and Europe. What was designed as a relatively small, time-limited research inquiry has turned out to be an ongoing research, professional development and popular education initiative.

"Our research found that fathers are largely invisible in the child welfare system regardless if they were seen as a risk or an asset," says Dr. Brown. "Our research explored how ghost fathers are created and how ignoring fathers impacts children. We focused on what good practice with fathers entails."

Jacquie Green

Kundoqk, Dr. Jacquie Green (Haisla Territory)

On July 1, 2013 Dr. Jacquie Green was appointed the new director of UVic's School of Social Work. Jacquie co-developed the Indigenous specializations program in the School. She is the first Indigenous director of the UVic School of Social Work and the first Indigenous Director of any School of Social Work in Canada. This is a major milestone for Jacquie, for the Haisla Nation and for Schools of Social Work across Canada.

Jacquie is also the Project Manager for the Indigenous Child Well-being Research Network (http://web.uvic.ca/icwr/ichdwel.htm) which is a national network of child welfare community-based researchers, who are working to determine best practices in Indigenous child well-being. The network's vision is to establish a research institute in BC to ensure Indigenous children and families are nurtured with traditional teachings and practices that are relevant to the diverse Indigenous cultures of the province.

Jacquie's name Kundoqk: "My name means "journeying over the mountain with belongings on my back" and originates from the Tsmishian nation.  It was gifted to my parents on their wedding day by the late Walter Write for their first born daughter..."
