Program features
The BCom program is innovatively structured to balance theory and practice. Not only do you learn the functional areas of business, you also experience first-hand working in teams, analyzing and making decisions to meet deadlines, navigating cultural differences and working side by side with industry professionals. Program advantages are highlighted here:Cohort class structure
Our 2+2 structure means you spend the first two years independently doing general courses and then the next two years doing business courses as part of a group cohort. Your cohort consists of about 60 fellow students that you take all your courses with. Diversity is maximized within the cohort to reflect the realities of the working environment where you don't choose who you work with. Benefits include:
- developing leadership, teamwork and communication skills
- creating life-long networks and great friendships
International experience
The world is getting "flatter" and opportunities abound for doing business globally. Knowledge of the diverse, complex world we live in and the skill-set to engage with it are essential. Opportunities include:
- immersing yourself in a diverse learning community of students and faculty from all over the world
- contributing to a a conversation enriched by different points of view
- studying International Business (IB) as a core course and take other IB electives or IB as your specialization
- working abroad on an international co-op work term
- studying abroad for a term at one of over 70 of our exchange partner universities
Mandatory co-operative learning
Ours is the only business program in Canada that has mandatory co-operative learning for all undergraduates. Over the course of your program, you do three co-operative (paid work terms), either in Canada or internationally. Benefits include:
- valuable work experience and a polished repertoire of soft skills
- a clearer understanding of the job market and greater confidence in your chosen career path
- an opportunity to apply the knowledge you've gained in the classroom in a real-life setting
Specializations
Today's dynamic business world needs people who can think critically and creatively and lead competently in specific areas. To meet this need we've added 21st century fields of specialization to the traditional business curriculum. Each of these three specializations is taught in an integrative manner with collaborative/team based instruction in an "immersion" style environment:
An integrative approach
In the business world, problems don't neatly fit into one functional area. What seems to be a marketing problem, may also involve finance and operations. And did you consider how your solution affects the sustainability of your business? You develop your ability to apply cross-functional knowledge and exercise sound judgement – no matter what problems you face. Here's how:
- a cross-functional curriculum
- case analyses
- business simulations
- team-taught specializations
Executive mentors
After the first core term of year three, you may participate in our mentorship program. Based on your career interests and goals, you are matched with a business leader in the community. Engaging in this interactive and indivualized development relationship has several benefits:
- foster clarity of purpose, autonomy and self-insight
- learn first hand the realities and skill requirements of a desired career path or profession
- develop knowledge, skills and contacts to increase career success.

Russell Murray's two co-op work terms at the Port Alice Neucel Speciality Cellulose mill helped defray his school expenses, and the mill took him on full-time as soon as he completed his classes. Read more about Russell's BCom experience.
