International

Dr. A.R. Elangovan

"The attention to developing an international mind-set has been a core philosophy since the school was established in 1990, says Dr. A.R. Elangovan, professor and director of International Programs at the Gustavson School of Business.

"Canada is a trading nation; thus, students must have a grasp of how business is done in other countries," he says. "As well, gaining experiences that take place beyond one's own borders helps build tolerance and understanding, and that's something you can't get out of a textbook." One of the school's flagship programs is its international exchange. With more than 70 partner universities, students can study abroad in any non-English speaking country.

"We really encourage our students to participate in the academic exchange," says Elangovan. "I think it gives them two things: a mind-set that reflects the diversity and complexity of the world, and a skill-set to succeed in it. If you can cope in another country, where you don't speak the language, and where everything you believed to be true is challenged, then you can manage at home. You become very adept at maintaining your balance on shifting grounds."
