The Canadian Network for Environmental Education and Communication (EECOM) has honoured the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business at the University of Victoria with its Outstanding Post-Secondary Program award for contributions to environmental education in 2013.

“At Gustavson, our approach is to integrate sustainability and social responsibility into our courses, our operations and our culture,” explains Dr. Monika Winn, a professor of business and sustainability, and the director of Gustavson’s Centre for Social and Sustainable Innovation. “Developing students' eco-literacy, their skills and knowledge to do business sustainably and responsibly is built into the core curricula of all of our programs, and we hope that the students will carry those lessons with them into the wider world to create positive change throughout their careers.

“We want our students,” she says, “to approach the business world differently.”

Pipeline Palooza

On March 19, 2013, researchers and doctoral students from the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business congregated in the second annual “Pipeline Palooza”, a unique research conference on campus.

Unlike traditional research conferences with a focus largely on full papers in the latter half of the research pipeline, “Pipeline Palooza” was created in 2012 to celebrate and support research at all stages of the research process – from initial idea to post-publication impact.

The day-long 2013 conference focused on four main areas: research resources available on campus, formal presentations on developed papers by Gustavson faculty, small group discussions on papers in development, and large group strategic discussions on enhancing the research culture at the Gustavson School of Business.

Gustavson Research Champion Dr. Wade Danis commented “Pipeline Palooza has been such a great opportunity for scholars to share ideas and strategies and to identify potential joint research projects. Several spinoff initiatives have resulted including an entrepreneurship research incubator group and new research teams. In addition, some faculty members have taken a more active role in mentoring PhD students and other faculty in specific areas.”

In addition to external awards, we also celebrate excellence through our own awards program, which annually recognizes faculty and staff members for excellence in research, teaching, service and innovation.

Knights School Annual Survey, 2006

In 2006, our undergraduate program placed seventh out of 45 Canadian business schools in the 2006 Knights School's annual survey. Among the best practices cited was the Sustainability Award given out in the entrepreneurship specialization's Innovation Project™—where students have only 10 days to create a new business with economic, social and/or environmental value. MBA students received a nod for projects which included consulting for poverty perspectives in Senegal and a First Nations project involving organic agriculture in BC.

The annual survey ranks business schools on course work, faculty initiatives and student-led activity. For more information visit www.corporateknights.ca.
